Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Orange box hands on (1up)

Found this when i was browsing Joystiq

We feel for you, PlayStation 3 owners. We really do. No, we're not knocking the scrappy, gargantuan console - we literally feel bad about the system's history with game delays. Not just delays on PS3 exclusives, like MGS4, Haze and Home, but the games that other platforms have been enjoying the company of for a while. When we PC and 360 owners sit down to enjoy the frivolous exploits of Gordon Freeman in The Orange Box, we feel pangs of guilt for enjoying the bounties which you have not yet received, like we're eating a 40 oz. rib-eye in the middle of a welfare soup line.

To add insult to injury, and then to pour a salt and lemon juice cocktail into said injury, the PS3 version of Orange Box has received the developmental shaft, according to a recent preview on 1UP. While the PC and 360 versions of the game were largely managed by Valve, the PS3 version was apparently the responsibility of a team at EA. This has led to a number of framerate hiccups and other technical issues which "at best merely hinder game play and at worst make the experience downright unplayable."

Gabe Newell, Valve's co-founder, has never been a huge fan of the PS3, calling the system "a waste of everybody's time." Let's hope that the issues facing Orange Box are just small oversights, and not the results of a software tycoon's maniacal personal vendetta. (We think it's the first one, for what it's worth.)

I want to know why exclusives look beyond anything on the 360 or PC for that matter on the ps3. Bu multiplatforms look like 360 wash outs?

Becuase they port it from 360 to ps3.

I can't believe the Valve bashing here. Putting their games on consoles is a gift, be happy you play it at all! It's meant for PC anyway.

Is a crappy deleyad port of a game a gift?

Why are you blaming them for that? They gave it to EA to do. There is no reason EA shouldn't know how to port a PC game to the PS3. It's EA's fault. Not Valve's. Valve made a brilliant game and it's your own problem that you can't play it. Get a PC that can play it (not hard) or a 360.

Exactly.  Valve make great games, the Valve bashing by PS3 fanboys is ridiculous.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

Yea guys I'm sure boycotting EA and Valve is the way to go. What other big name publisher yall going to boycott next.

1) PS3 owners boycott EA and Valve

2) EA and Valve games sell even worse on the PS3

3) EA and Valve make even less money on the PS3

4) EA and Valve put even less time and money into future PS3 games

5) PS3 owners (at least the ones who can't play these games on PC/360) get even more pissed off

6) They flip out on gaming forums, providing the rest of us with entertainment when we're not busy playing EA and Valve games

That's the winning formula.

For the 360, Rock Band (94), Fight Night 3 (86), skate (86), NHL 08 (85), and Madden 08 (85) are ranked high enough that all five could be in the top 10 games for PS3. Four of those games ARE in the top 20 for PS3, so apparently EA can make decent PS3 games.

EA has yet to release a game that utilizes a single SPE. THus the inferior ports. I have a fealing that Activision is going to win the 3rd party sales race again due to its multiplats of equal quality.

So what do you win if your prefered console sells more than another?

@zero

No 3rd party game(except HAZE, and UT3)

use the ps3's spe's. tehy jsut use graphcis card and ram.

First of all, people complained about the F.E.A.R. port but I played it and it was fine. Rainbow Six had a few problems supposedly but received great reviews despite those problems and played fine. I enjoyed them both.

I believe the problem with F.E.A.R. was that it was pretty inferior to the 360 and PC versions. Not that I'm ever going to play it on the PS3 as I already have it on the PC. . . and I don't care much for the game itself anyway.

I know, that's why people complained. I'm saying that playing the PS3 version was fine. Maybe if you compared them side-by-side you could tell the difference, but the PS3 version alone was fine. The Orange Box worries me because by only playing the PS3 Madden this year I could tell it was slow compared to previous PS2 versions, and that's pathetic. F.E.A.R. really didn't have many issues and played fine. I liked it for the scary moments and the A.I. was pretty good, but I'm sure technically it was inferior, especially to the PC version.  The PC version is aways better, but we all know that.  At least UT3 for PS3 will have mods.  Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (Wii) supposedly has the best console controls ever as well, except for UT3 since it supports keyboard and mouse.  Anyway...

We'll see what E.A. does to Valve's game, though.
