Yes. And what's your point? The PS2 has 115 2 Million sellers, the DS has 101 1 Million sellers.

And Final Fantasy sold more on PS3 because of Japan Exclusivity, and the majority of people who wanted the game already having a PS3 due to it being "exclusive" until E3 08. Add into that the PS3 version being the superior version... And you get more sales on PS3.

Yeah sure comparing a system selling software during ten years to a system selling software during only 5 years. Nice job!

And like I said before... now you can compare software sales between a handheld and a home console, but when you are saying that the DS will become (very soon) the best selling gaming system, there is people claiming that you can't compare a handheld to a home console.

As for FFXIII, you said it all, the game was exlusive in Japan and didnt sell as much as FFX or FFXII did. I guess the userbase does play a role after all.

1. Great damage control

2. So? This is about software sales, not hardware. He pulled the Wii into the comparison so i proved him wrong with the mighty PS2.

3. Nope. Not really. Poor reception to the game itself for changing stuff and being "linear" would have caused that. As Yakuza would prove my point again, with Yakuza 4 being the fastest selling in the series, faster than the PS2 Yakuza Now could you stay on topic please, and not make this into a FF discussion. This is about how GTA:CW has underperformed compared to every other GTA game. Thanks.

1. No, just pointed a simple fact. Something that you won't be able to deny.

2. This was damage control.

3. Back on topic, If you want to make comparison then compare GTA:CW(DS) to GTA:CW(PSP) because it's just the common sense to do that (same genre, both released on handheld). Otherwise you won't be taken seriously here.

1. I can't deny it, but it has nothing to do with the topic we were discussing.

2. You butted into the conversation, the one where Bamboleo compared the DS to the... Wii. A console. You do understand that, don't you? So SURELY the PS2 (One with more Million sellers than DS and Wii) can be used. So no, no damage control there

3. I wont be taken seriously by you. It seems plenty more people are saying it flopped or didn't impress, than are saying it did well

"terrible for a GTA game and considering the userbase, not that incredible"

Did you look at the sales for the GTA games before III? They were terrible as well considering the userbase for the PS1.

GTA 1 sold 2.3 Million

GTA 2 sold 3.4 Million

Both sold more, on less userbase. So what's the excuse now?

I didn't claim they sold less, so pretending I'm making an excuse is just a strawman.

All i've seen in the thread (not necessarily from you) has been excuses (for both DS and PSP versions).

The fact is, it has sold TERRIBLE for a GTA game. Top down or not. Fact.

Oh my, so much..... hypocrisy. It's not even funny :(

"All i've seen in the thread (not necessarily from you) has been excuses (for both DS and PSP versions)."

How is it an excuse that the highest selling top-down GTA game has sold less than the lowest selling full 3D GTA game? Those are cold, hard numbers. Claiming that it's terrible to sell about a third as much as its closest proper game is the real excuse.

GTA did not become the top tier series with top down gameplay. There was no way this game was going to sell numbers even as high as LCS.

1- Glad you admit it.

2- Still comparing a console selling for ten years (PS2) to a console selling for less than 4 years (Wii)...

3- Agreed and they were also more people on that site predicting Uncharted 2 to have a bigger holiday then NSMB Wii or that FFXIII released in Japan only will sell more  than NSMB Wii worldwide during December (see poll section). What does all that means?

I wondering what the iPhone sales for this game are now... within two weeks of it's january release it sold 250.000 downloads.. no numbers are released after that.. maybe it already outsold the psp version..

GTA 1 sold 2.3 Million

At that point top-down GTA was fresh, hip, and new.

Then 3-D GTA blew it out of the water.

Now top-down GTA is considered "retro," a rehash, and a step backwards into the 90's.  Most of the casual/mainstream GTA fans have moved on to the 3rd dimension.  It's not the type of IP that has retro fans that want to see it go back to its roots, like Mario or Sonic or Mega Man or whatever.

They made a really awesome game for a really niche audience.  I'm not sure why.  But it was awesome.  I thought it was a great mish-mash of both the 2-D and 3-D styles.  It was basically only made for nerds like me.  I loved it more than GTA 1 and 2, which I also loved.  The only bad top-down GTA was on the GBA, but it was licensed out to a shovelware developer, and I have no idea why.

Userbase size has nothing to do with it, if the almighty PS1 and PS2 can't even have one of the top 10 best-selling games of all time.

I know it burns you up that Carnival Games has become more relevant than GTA but on the bright side, at least CG sales keep TT around long enough for Rockstar to put out another GTA or two.

Seeing how Carnival Games sells at 20$ a piece or less and the game has sold 500k units in the last year I guess that means TakeTwo have drastically reduced their development budget...........

That's what, 20% of the revenue GTA brought in the last year ? Less ? ( 1 million PS3 copies, 1 millions 360 copies in last 50 weeks + 2x DLCs..)

You think they stopped with the first Carnival Games?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I don't think it is right to call a game a success for hitting one million when its

- A game from a massive selling series
- It took an entire year to reach one million
- Most of those sales were after it was declared to underperform and shops were selling it for about 30% of its release price only a few weeks after release (a bargain bin game).

Neither is it right to call it terrible for just hitting one million when it's:

  • Losing the full 3D control which is when the series when from a few million to massive selling
  • It has an art style atypical to the series, which makes people look like blobs with the perspective
  • Doesn't even feel like the 3D GTA games overall

So even if it's not a smashing success, it's not terrible. It had just as many things against it as were for it. Brand name alone can't sell a product when it's the brand name plus the associations that sell a product. CW lost those associations.
