Forums - Sales - PS3 will never catch the the 360 now. Wii won a long time ago.

@jarrod

If MS ever has a winning console, I imagine some Atari fans (I´m sure they still exist :P) will be really glad to see an American system on top again (something no one´s seen since the Atari 2600).

One of the consequences of the crash in 1983 was how the dominance shifted from the U.S. to Japan due to the success of the NES....all 'winning' systems have been Japanese since then...some of those Atari fans probably want to see an American system be the dominant force once again.

70% of console total sales happen in the 200$ price range. Keep up the good work, gumshoe.

yea... and 99% of console total sales happen below $300 unless the item gets discontinued early.

I can spout stats too

Now, I'm not saying price can't be a hinderance, but reducing price won't magically boost sales either. There is also the issue that the PS2 (typically used to prove this 70% thing) spent a lot less time over $200 than it did under $200.

Yeah I think the majority of the generation is already done. This generations hardware sales to date (Wii, 360, PS3) = 77.17% of last gens (PS2, Xbox, GC) hardware sales to date. Even taking into account predicted increased demand this generation, I think its safe to say the generation is more than half-way done. A $200 PS3 slim and 360 Elite will produce a really nice boost but those who get the systems then will be late adopters (ok maybe not. Maybe theyll still be considered late majority).

Don't underestimate anyone right now...something could happen that would shift things a bunch

Pretty much this.  Absolutely no one saw Nintendo taking over this generation, not even Nintendo themselves.  Hell, most analysts and 3rd party publishers still refuse to believe it. ;)

It's not gonna be either Microsoft or Sony.

Don't be surprised if Nintendo gets 100% marketshare eventually. Now that would be surprising to a lot of people.

GOWIII and GT5 generic? ...

In reference to your signature, it looks like Kevin Butler has been working his way down the management chain.  Eventually he is going to be part-time sales clerk at Best Buy the way things are going.  And yes, people will get MORE than enough share of da BOOM from him.

If any hardware giant gets 100% marketshare, that will only hurt the industry.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

While a lot of sales come at a low price point, a lot of sales come early in a generation too.

So it is doubtful that all consoles have had at least four holiday seasons that we will see much movement in the order. The biggest problem is that it could never sway marginal PS2 owners from moving up. Initially the price was too high. Then the removal of backward compatibility removed any incentive a PS2 might have had to just buy the next system in the series (as opposed to buying another system or no system).

I cant believe you guys think thats sony almost used all of its trump cards. First of all i dont think the PS3 "slim" is actually sony's ps3 slim. It was just a way to cut prices so they can compete. In all interviews sony never refers to the new model as the ps3 slim. even on the box it doesnt say ps3 slim. I have a felling that in a year or two sony will redesign the ps3 again and it will be slimmer. Who knows sony might be successful with the MOVE. There is a chance they can bundle MOVE with GT5 if GT5 has Move support. Who knows? I actually think Sony will catch up to microsoft this gen.

it all depends on how popular the motion controls are
until there released this gen could go to MS or sony

Nope, the OP is right.

Unless there is some killer app (like wii fit) that literally forces the 30m users to want Natal/Move (and that's a big if) they will be far less than 20% of the userbase and do absolutley nothing for the overall product.

MS/Sony really needed to wait for the next gen to introduce motion of their own. 97% of games that are going to have support for Natal/Move will also have standard controls and that is what the greater majority of existing gamers will be happy with. Wii was successful because the standard controller was the wiimote.

However, I think there is a small chance PS3 can still catch 360 in the long run IF it last on the market at least a year longer than the 360 does.

It's his signature. Just happens to be a real one- unlike most of the sigs on this site.

Actually, its not his sig as its in the quotable box. That means he actually has to type it in each time.

However, its pretty good that he never forgets.
