The Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices (SACHD) service have released a new report forecasting that PlayStation 3 hardware will eventually outsell Xbox 360 and Wii, expecting Sony's system to continue selling much longer than its rival home consoles.

The report, “Taming the Waves: Games Console Life Cycles and Platform Competition,” admits that Wii's hardware sales have so far eclipsed those of the PS3 and Xbox 360 but predicts that Sony's console will still be a commercial platform five years after the Wii is replaced. It expects that PS3's global lifetime sales will reach 127 million, compared to its prediction of 103 million Wii units.

Sony Computer Entertainment's chairman and CEO Kaz Hirai has previously described the PS3 as a ten-year console, one that it believes consumers will continue to purchase and use long after they replace their Xbox 360 and Wii systems with their successors.

"Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences,” says SACHD principal analyst and the report's author David Mercer. "But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014."

SACHD also anticipates that the global installed base of home consoles will reach over 220 million by the end of the year, but its models indicate that the ownership of current systems will peak in 2011. At that point, the firm believes vendors will "need to introduce new systems in order to maintain industry growth."

"Console industry cycles have given the industry major planning challenges for many years," says Mercer. "There are signs that this volatility may be moderating as platforms add home entertainment and social networking services beyond pure gaming."

In other words...

PS3 will sell for 10+ years, and will continue growing yearly for ever!

And Wii HD is coming next year!

The sad part is , is that someone will actually agree with this......

wow that's a bold prediction....even at my most liberal prediction I have the ps3 lifetime sales at no more than 75 mil (and I thought that was stretching it)

Well, if we figure around 10 years of sales, so about 6.6 years left that is (127-32) = 95 million divided by 6.6 years = 14.4 million a year. That's doable, right? O_o

As promised, a quick preview of our games console forecast which will be published early next week. No surprise that Nintendo’s Wii stands in the lead at the moment, within the current generation of systems, in terms of global installed base. We estimate that there will be nearly 76 million Wiis in use worldwide by the end of 2010.

But the signs are that the Wii has peaked in terms of console sales, and its installed base will begin to decline after 2011. Meanwhile, Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will continue to grow, so that the PS3 will become the largest platform globally by 2013. In terms of cumulative lifetime sales we expect the PS3 to hit 127 million units, compared to 103 million Wiis.

These estimates are derived from our core forecast scenario, but we have developed various scenarios for each platform. Uncertainties clearly surround each of the major platforms, particularly relating to the new services and upgrades planned by Sony and Microsoft. Natal on the Xbox could be more beneficial to 360 sales than expected, and Sony’s own motion controller, together with its plans to upgrade all PS3s to 3D capabilitiy, also represent potential for upside to our core forecasts.

This year’s global market for consoles is likely to fall again, after a 6% decline last year. For 2010 we are predicting global console sales of 47.5 million, a 9% decline.The Wii will account for most of that decline: sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 are predicted to increase.

What's really sad is they expect people to pay $6999 for this 'research'.
