The important piece of information is not the average internet speed but the average upper quartile speeds, as these people are your main market for direct download, just as people with 50+" TVs are a large market for Blu Ray.

Well now I don't know what you mean... Yes the people with the highest download speeds will be the ones in the market for digital distribution, but that small percentage isn't going to make bluray obselete for many years.

Just as the small % of people who have a large enough HDTV will slow down Blu Ray adoption. I wasn't talking about obsoletion, I was saying they'd have to share the spot light with other technologies. Look back at my earlier comments and you'll see.

HDTV % is much much higher than the High Download Capabilities % . Bluray will certainly share the spotlight with other technologies, but not digital download for several more years.

My thing is if I want to start a movie collection right now, should I start buying Blu Rays with the confidence that my collection won't be outdated in a decade?

I can see blu-ray lasting at least 5 more years. People who think digital distribution is the next big thing should stop considering that unless your willing to pay $150 a month for high speed internet. Im guessing people who have high speed internet now are averaging 6mbps. For me downloading a movie takes about 30-45 mins. Thats just stander def. If i want high def movies its like 2 or 3 times longer. Even with next gen consoles i cant see people using digital downloads for there games. Thats just going to take to long. Unless internet company offer 50mbps for $50 a month i dont see this happening anytime soon.

I'm just afraid that it'll last a short period of time. I've invested too much money on Blu Ray. I own 60 + movies on Blu ray

I think you guys are overestimating internet speed connections around the world.

As long as it's cheaper to buy physical media, it'll be the standard. Blu-ray will eventually become just as affordable as DVDs are now.

I also think HDTVs have a higher chance of becoming mainstream before average internet speed is high enough for DD.

It hasn't really taken over DVD completely, yet, but hopefully it lasts a while since I just got a blu-ray player a couple of months ago.

4-5 years I'd say.

What do you mean outdated? People can still watch their DVD's and even VHS if they have a VCR. It's not like your capability to watch your collection disappears if they stop selling new copies at the store.

Hell I still watch VHS sometimes 9I have a hybrid DVD/VHS player).

I've bought over 500 DVDs and I haven't upgraded to BR yet and when I do I'll continue to buy a lot of physical media.

The short of it is a log time. Maybe 10 years or so. I mean it still hasn't overtaken DVD yet.

Considering they have managed to create 200 GB discs and 100GB discs can be read by current players...I dont see the need to dump the format. Barring MGS, uncharted 2 and FF..no other title really takes full advantage of the space available right now- with all likelihood MS is gonna use Bluray for the 720.

Secondly, internet speeds are getting faster. BUT> alot of companies have fair use policies in place. So we have 100GB etc download limits marring the download experience.

I'd say the format will last another 5-8 yrs atleast(mainstream), unless holographic discs can bring digital quality cinema(4MP) home in a well priced move...

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.
