I mean its all about the brand according to them, this is their problem - attitude.

They seem to think that now they have built their brand they can just exploit it forever and everyone will lap it up. They're in 3rd place, proof that enough that they can't.

He didn't call the Wii a fad, per se, he was talking about the controller. At least that's what the paragraph before it was talking about. Since there was no mention of Wii in the paragraph when he said fad, I'll take it that the second paragraph was siimply a continuation of the first.

And the only reason they say fad is because they are building off mass media bullshit to help position themselves publicly ahead and above the Wii.
