Forums - Gaming - [Poll] Is Pokémon More Popular With Kids or Adults?

Pokémon is more popular with…

Kids (18y and under) 1 4.17%

Adults 14 58.33%

50/50 9 37.50%

Total:24

On the one hand: Kids have Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite. Adults have the purchasing power and nostalgia.

But on the other hand… this is Pokémon we’re talking about. You mean to tell me Pokémon ScVi was purchased by more grown adults than Zelda TotK?

That said, I really have no clue whether it’d lean more toward one demographic or the other. But if I’d have to pick one? I’d say kids.

Kids nowadays have way more options than Pokemon. Plus, they are more into free to play, instead of the whole 500€ Switch 2 + 80€ game + online + DLC.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Y’know, come to think of it, I remember playing my DS all the time until I got my first iOS device (iPod Touch 4 for Christmas 2011. I was in 3rd grade at the time). From 2012 through 2016, outside of Skylanders, the only games I played were Angry Birds, Temple Run, Flappy Bird, Angry Birds Go!, Dragonvale, Clash of Clans, and tons of other F2P games I happened to stumble across on the App Store. Being a kid, I didn’t have $60USD to spend, so F2P was the only feasible way to purchase video games.

Here in China pokemon is super popular, i was just at sams club two days ago (first time) and saw a kid with a hug box that had 6 pokemon balls and 6 toy pokemon inside. He and his sister looked maybe 7-10 years old?

我是广州人

I don't know. But considering when the franchise came out, and the age of those kids now, I would guess adults.

I really have no idea, but I’ll share one anecdotal piece of evidence. Last week I went to Target to pick up a plush Bulbasaur for my wife (she fell in love with him while playing Pokopia). On my way back to my car, I walked past a family on its way into the store. The son (maybe 8 years old?) was wearing a Charizard shirt. He pointed at the Bulbasaur and startled gesturing excitedly to his parents. I gave him a thumbs up and kept walking.

So, a 42-year-old man bought a Pokémon plush for his 39-year-old wife and an 8-year-old boy approved. Take from that what you will :P

My kids never got into Pokemon, but my nephew and all of his friends love Pokemon cards and he plays Pokemon on his switch 1.

Here in Brazil, definitely more popular with adults around my age who grew up with gen 1.
It's not even close.

My personal experience - which is obviously subjective and not neccesarily a reflection of the reality - is that it is way more popular with kids. While a ton of adults grew up with it and remember the earlier pokemon games fondly, most of them have moved on from the franchise and would not even be able to recognize modern pokemons. But all the kids from my nephews and nieces generations follow the franchise, play the games, and specially collect the cards. Im talking about kids aged 6-10.

From my limited perspective, the broad general public is completely aware of it or has interact with the franchise in some capacity even in this day n age through the games, the cards or the mobile apps.

Arguably, adults are it's core public but they definitely do manage to maintain a healthy young base of players or people into it from a young age.
It renews itself continuously which help in turn the aging demographic that might actively quit at some point.

So 50/50 it is to me
