Forums - Gaming - I Don’t Understand All The Outrage? Sony DRM Policy

Well, I guess today’s the day I decide to finally begin a thread over a topic that's long been of interest to me— all instances where the internet is outraged over something and I just can't understand why. Opening this thread is none other than Sony, specifically with their newly enforced “Initial 30 Day DRM Check”.

As I see it, this DRM check is done only one time within the first 30 days of purchasing digital product through the PS Store. The target is those who exploit a loophole in the refund policy which allow for games to be refunded beyond the window permitted by Sony.

Is this correct? Or am I missing something? If so, then... what's with all the outrage?

It doesnt seem like youre missing anything.
In fact, i was today years old when i found out Sony has a refund policy for digital purchases.

I saw SpawnWave swap out the CMOS battery on his PS5 to reset the internal time and he couldn’t launch his digital games. So it seems like it’s a monthly check.

What’s causing most of the confusion is Sony refusing to officially clear anything up.

Ok, but what is exactly the problem here? you have to have an internet connection once every month to be able to launch the games you've purchased digitally? is that it? Even If they are already installed? Cause how does that work, they are already purchased and installed.

Here's another interpretation of SpawnWave's check. I've also come across another user on ResetEra explain that this check is only performed once via hacking their system.

Sony really shouldn't have stealth dropped this info— definitely would've been much to their benefit had they explicitly stated what's going on upon dropping this update. Their lack of response is certainly also a tad bit interesting, though it also has only been a few hours. Just give it some time. We should know the answer officially within the next two months, worst case scenario.

Just the long term implications. Sony’s enabled online DRM first on all disc drives in their initial activation and now this. On the surface it’s not a big deal, but it makes you wonder how much further will they go as time goes on.

But also, there just shouldn’t be any DRM like this lol that’s just common sense though. You purchase a single player game, you shouldn’t ever have to worry about an arbitrary monthly timer.

Because nobody knows what the exact policy is or how it actually works. Too much conflicting reports out there. AI bots saying there is, human chat support saying there isn’t etc etc. Sony being silent like usual. The outrage should be simple, if there is a 30 day check in for digital games then why should you buy any digital games going forward? Sony got away with implementing the A/B pricing system, why should they get away with this too.

I hope this is just about enfrocing the refund policy, but it feels off because they aren't telling us what it is exactly. The silence makes this very sus.
I have a hard time thinking up a scenario where I don't turn my console on for a month, but still.

I don't get it either. I thought something like that was already active, lol. I mean when you buy something digitally you can't really expect to "own" it. Hasn't that been the case since... I don't know, forever? =P

Yup. The more rope you give them the more they try and get away with. It always starts small. Why I say boiling frog. Allowing yourself to be boiled slowly. It's not just one thing but a series of bad things that will only get worse the more people stay quiet.  Do people really think Sony didn't want the same policies Xbox was spouting in 2013? Of course they did but fans were loud and clear. Sony took that opportunity to spin Xbox's lashing in their favor. Xbox back peddled. Stay quiet and you boil, be loud and maybe they back peddle.
