I tried quite some city builders/colony sims over the last year. Rise to Ruins left the strongest impression. That is because it mixes up genres very effectively. The genres added in are god game and tower defense.
It might be relatively easy to see how a god game fits in with a colony sim. After all early god sims also were kinda colony sims. In basic you can cast spells, that help your settlers. The mana for these spells comes from the faith of the settlers. The more settlers there are and the happier they are, the more and more powerful spells you can cast.
But how does Tower Defense come in? Well, most colony sims let you play against the environment, especially Winter often is a challenge to survive. This is no different here, but there is an additional challenge added in. In some corner of the map territory starts to fall to corruption. The corruption spreads, winning power over time. And it spawns monsters. Every night they will attack your village. In the beginning fighting villagers and maybe a spell or two might help to fend them off, but over time you will need to invest in walls and defensive towers. They are built like other buildings in your village, eating up resources and builders time. But they help you defend against the monsters.
The game can be pretty hard, but for each time in your village you get God-XP, which you can invest in passive enhancements, that willl make your task simpler. If corruption overruns you, you can doom the world, but keep God XP and the passives to help you with your next colony. If the colony is big enough, you can send migrants and goods to neighboring places, to start up a new colony there. There is a world map, which shows the regions.
There are different modes, two normal difficulties, a peaceful mode for settling without the stress of corruption and a custom mode, in which you can in detail set stuff.
This is a fun game, easily addicting.
