Forums - Sales Discussion - Why everyone thinks Killzone 2 will be huge?

Guys - I think we should help the Sony fanboys to hype the game up. Then we can really enjoy it when NPD will report their numbers (I really want another helping of LBP-like glee). So...

OMG, OMG, OMG!
This game is going to be huge!! This is THE Halo killer.. It is going to be the definitive title of the PS3. People will stand in line for hours at mid-night to get it3M sold in the first 24 hours. This title is going to sink the 360 and is going to give Sony its PS2 glory back.

Oh yeah! you just wait and see the PS3 numbers when this game comes out. The 360 has shot all of its bullets and has nothing new to offer anymore. All of the coming games for the 360 will be lucky to tough an 85 metacritic score Don't you know? The 3rd year is the peak year for a console so the 360 is now on its death spiral.

2009 is the year of the PS3 and KZ2 is the our Stalingrad!

Prediction made on 11/1/2008:

Q4 2008: 27M xbox LTD, 20M PS3 LTD . 2009 sales: 11M xbox,  9M PS3

It will do good but I don't expect it to be huge, probably about 3.5-4 million LTD, but you never know by February (I do believe this is when it's releasing) the PS3's userbase should be much bigger because of the holidays so it could have a fairly good opening week.

Hmm. That'd be more than MGS4 and almost as much as COD4/passing COD4. I'm not sure it'll be that big since MGS and CoD are pretty hot IPs and much more hyped than KZ2. I'd say 3 million. 3.5 mil might not be so far off but not sure, but that's as long as Sony markets it as one of the best, if not the best, shooters on the PS3. No way it'll hit 4 million.

Well that's why it's maximum 4 million because it doesn't look like it's going to sell better then MGS4 or Cod4. But already MGS4 is at 3.5 million so by the end of this generation MGS4 should be close to 5 million easily, and CoD4 is at 3.6 million now and should be able to make 4 million. So Killzone 2 is not going to surpass either one of them two games, in my opinion.

Eventually Sony's gonna learn that they've got to market these big games more, so maybe they'll do a good job with marketing Killzone 2, I know they've started working on marketing certain games more now.

Oh yeah, it's always fun to laugh at fantastic games that don't live up to sales expectations.  Oh god thank goodness we're not fans of gaming in general or we would be sad that a great game was overlooked, but instead we can just be total dildoes and glory in it.  You remember when Beyond Good and Evil or Okami failed?  God I died laughing for like a week.  Good times.

...

For one this game has fantastic MP having played it and the SP is said to be the best out there so the quality is there. Next the game has had a huge sum of money dumped into the project so it will have to sell probably 3-4M just to break even. With that said Sony is a business and want back as much money as possible so IMO they will go all out with this game in terms of advertisements.

It's going to sell well, anyone who thinks not is just fooling themselves. It will dwarf R2 in sales, had R2 been delayed in stead of Killzone 2 sales would have been affected drastically.

Because is another "Savior" for the ps3, and people want to convince everyone to buy it.... oh wait, sorry.

Because it will be huge :)

These are the types of comments you want to avoid "just in case" it isn't huge.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Well of course quality does not equal sales but it is all I can comment on as of now, the quality of the game which trumps any thing else out there. As long as I get to play this game I am happy, very nice little 'gift' for my PS3 as I only brought my PS3 for GT5 and got this pleasent suprise.

While I have no doubt it will sell well, I've always been skeptical about the quality. I know I'm not the only one, but I can't take a game whose previous entry sucked, and from a developer whose other shooter sucked even worse, seriously as a AAA shoo-in. I judge the potential quality of the game not on money or hype, but on the developers record. Many games have come and gone that took years and millions to develop, only to turn out crappy. On this record, Killzone 2 has alot to prove and definitely doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.

I know it looks fantastic and stuff, but it's being released after the holidays in one of the "quiet" months so the legs will be non-existants. Plus it's an exclusive on the PS3 and the only PS3 exclusive that did great so far is MGS4 which is a proven quality title, unlike Killzone.

No competition, no other games people will want to buy, it'll do great.

No competition? I seriously doubt it. Halo Wars?

1 game on a different platform..... Look what just happened with Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, LittleBigPlanet, Gears of War 2, and Guitar Hero World Tour all being released so close together.

Killzone will be the only big release for the PS3 at that time if I'm not mistaken.

To be completely honest with you here, lol, the 360 games sold millions of units in 48 hours, and the PS3 games sold so poorly, the PS3 fans flamed the site because they assumed they were under-tracked.

That's not fanboyism, that's simply what happened.

I've heard a few explainations.

The most likely is the lower userbase of the PS3 in America, a very front-loaded gaming territory who loves FPS.

Also, another great explaination is that PS3 owners like shooters less than 360 owners.

Finally, 360 owners like to buy more software than PS3 owners for whatever reason. The most common explaination for that is the 360 is a more "core" console for nerds and manchildren. I might contend that a lot of people bought PS3's for the Blu-Ray feature, but that'd draw a flame or two.

Anyway, yes big shooters can sell well even in the fact of mega competition.

If any of those explainations I've mentioned are true, then yes, they will also apply to KZ2.

Couple of things:

1. The FPS country is America, and the PS3 has a very small piece of the pie here.

2. Microsoft is putting a Halo game up against KZ2's launch. The game has the word Halo in it, it's on the 360, it's competition to anything.

3. PS3 owners don't like shooters as much as 360 owners. Yes that's a generalization, but it's a good assumption, seeing as how the majority of PS3 owners would be from Others and Japan, and not America.

So, it's either stick with those explainations, which were all lain before me and reinforced in the face of R2 sales.

....or admit that R2 just didn't sell well because it's R2, and had it been KZ2, it would have sold very well and had a higher attach rate.

The real issue for a new PS3 game is whether it will attract new customers. Wii and 360 are both likely on target for exceeding original sales expectations, while PS3 is still stuggling to catch up. They need more people buying their console. Halo Wars could provoke Last Genners into buying a 360. I'm not sure that KZ2 will be able to do that for the PS3. Hell, for most gamers, the differences between one FPS and another is minimal. I'm not sure there is anything KZ2 is offering that is so distinctive that players will say "ooh! I gotta try that!" So while I fully expect KZ2 to be a million, and probably multimillion, seller, I'm not sure how much it will really help Sony over all.

A very good point, but HALO as a RTS still has to be proven to be as big a hit as HALO the shooter imo

On the other hand, even crap video games have a history of selling if the right name is on the box (see anything with the word "Mario" in it, or anything tied into a hit movie).
