Forums - Sony Discussion - 40 GB PS3 to be Backwards Compatible in Oct. through Firmware???

Wonder how they're going to do that since they lack the chips necessary to do so.

Remember a couple of years ago when they had a PS2 emulation layer for the PC? This would somewhat similiar to what they are going to do with the new BC.  The PS3 has more than enough power to run PS2 games, they just have to create a software environment that emulates the PS2 hardware.   It isnt hard to do, it just hasnt been a priority for Sony.

Bethesda's Todd Howard "if install base really mattered, we'd all make board games, because there are a lot of tables."

I want know how well they can manage to pull it off because the Graphic Synthesizer's embedded RAM is faster than the PS3's RAM. That's the main reason for the 80GB's having the GS in the first place. The Embedded Ram in the GS had a 47GB a sec bandwith. The fastest RAM in the PS3 has 25.6GB a sec bandwith.

I'm not an expert at this kind of thing, but I couldn't see how any PS2 game would require 47gb a sec bandwidth, I mean no game was ever bigger than a DVD in total. Sure the technical capabilities might have been there, but very few (if any) games would have made the most of it.

I reinstate, I am no expert on the subject.

With the PS2, Sony choose speed over the mount of VRAM. The PS2 only had half the VRAM of the Dreamcast for example but the RAM was several times faster. PS2 games would have been coded with that in mind. My guess is they would have to figure away for the emulation program to load more textures than the PS2 hardware would normal load as a work around. The problem is the PS2 has custom hardware that lead developers to come out with several different ways to accomplish the same feats. Whatever software solution Sony comes up with will have to account for all these differences. Sony will essentially be facing the same issues MS has with X-box backwards compatibility on 360.

If this does come to pass, I would definitely think about purchasing a PS3.
The question is whether this will work as an update on all 40-gig units.

I expect some very cool announcements from Sony at this years E3.

-we will be getting in game XMB/trophies June 20th ish?

-they will discuss this topic (PS2 emulation) if it is credible

-Home Beta release details

- Video/Music store?

-New game announcements

-Solidify what sku's will be permanent going forward to compliment the 40 gig. (might just keep rolling out the 80 gig bundles)

Oh man.

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

=p Would be so AWESOME!!!

Especially the Japanese will love this :).

I ma sure that Sony will do something about BC,,,especially in japan,,,,look at what happened to PS3 sales after the BC was taken out.

This is badly needed. I really don't like how Sony has taken a loaded console and slowly stripped away features, bit by bit.

Well, most analysts have said that the 40g console has been a hyuuuugggge boost for the  PS3 as a brand.  Personally, i think that this is needed as well, but i am also somewhat disappointed with Sony's plodding kind of pace at improving things.
