Forums - Sony Discussion - 40 GB PS3 to be Backwards Compatible in Oct. through Firmware???

I think Sony will release a new SKU when this happens. Probably a Slim.

This is because a lot of people will see the 40gb as still not BC. Unless they stick a huge 'NOW BC WITH PS2!' on the front of the box.

Edit. This is the only thing stopping me buy a PS3 (i have 40 ish PS2 games and a broken PS2).

So thats me sold, if its true of course.

Maybe you can find a 60GB model lying around somewhere...

why everyone is so excited??? making software emulation is cool but take a wake up call first. at this stage of PC emulation on ps2 still run like shit even on the fastest overclock speed system and its still not playable form emulating any commercial game. Now do you think the cell can 100% emulate ps2 with acceptable solid 60 fps??? I'll highly doubt it can pull it off, if it does then sony have earn my loyalty.

It be awesome if they could, but what the hell do they need an 80gb model for? Hard drive amount already confuses some people and its easily upgradable. sorry if i misunderstood anything about the 80gb.

Wonder how they're going to do that since they lack the chips necessary to do so.

Remember a couple of years ago when they had a PS2 emulation layer for the PC? This would somewhat similiar to what they are going to do with the new BC. The PS3 has more than enough power to run PS2 games, they just have to create a software environment that emulates the PS2 hardware. It isnt hard to do, it just hasnt been a priority for Sony.

Yes the emulator for the ps2 does work on pc but it is very very slow, even on quad cores.

Soemulating the ps2 with software is going to be hard for sony to do without having slow down. but sony know the ps2 better then anyone else so if anyone can do it they can.

But i dont know probz that the CELLs architecture is in a way that it will be ableto emulate a ps2 game without any performance drop.
