I've always preferred turn-based combat systems in my RPGs. It's for that reason why I consider the 90s (especially the 16-bit era) as the Golden Age of the JRPG. So many greats came from Gen 4 & 5. Final Fantasy 4, 6, & 7, several old-school Dragon Quest games, Chrono Trigger, the Lunar duology, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound are all classics of the genre.

To this day, I still don't know why turn-based combat fell out of favor with gamers. It can't be because it's "outdated," because action RPGs are just as old and turn-based. Fortunately, it's not entirely dead, as attested to by recent games like Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler.

I would say Dragon Quest 11, Persona 5, and Yakuza 7 go much further to keep that sub genre alive because they do so in a modern way unlike the 2 games you listed. They rely on nostalgia of the past vs updating for the present; Is there a reason why any turnbased RPG's have to be made like its on the SNES? It only keeps the stigma that Turnbased is outdated alive.

Turn-based, followed by strategy. My two favorite games last year were a turn-based RPG and a strategy RPG.

Though I like games like Fallout (other than 76), The Outer Worlds, and have recently been enjoying Switcher 3, I still prefer Japanese RPGs over western RPGs.

My favorites are usually JRPG, doesnt matter if its turnbased/action/tactics/openworld/etc, I find value its individual traits, and I find the experience equally satisfying if the game is good. I do get nitpicky on the setting tho, I preffer a fantasy/sci-fi classic setting. I dont like it at all when the game feels it has a contemporary vibe. Specially school settings, I could never get into those.

That said, this particular gen I feel WRPGs won me over. Bloodborne and Witcher 3 in particular are amongst my favorites of all time now.

Whatever is closest to Paper Mario TTYD. I guess turn based. DQ11 definitely gave me those feels and I loved it. I'm convinced DQ11 was the Pokemon game I wanted this gen. Some of those creatures look like Pokemon, even.

For me it is very close between turn based and strategy RPGs, but in the end there are more turn based RPGs on my top games of all time list.  From a pure gameplay perspective, I think strategy RPGs are better.  But turn based RPG is the perfect medium to tell a great story.  I am very picky when it comes to stories in my video games.  The few stories that I like are mostly in turn based RPGs.  It's the type of game that enables great story telling.

I don’t know why you wrote open world RPG instead of Action RPG.
Open world is a level design choice, while turn-based RPG, Strategy RPG, and Action RPG are battle design choices.

Whatever the type Xenoblade X falls in.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Action RPG's and ARPG's by a country mile.

I used to play turn based RPG's a long time ago, but these days they completely put me off due to the turn based nature and slow pacing. Action based ones give me what I want there and now, while offering engaging stories that I just cannot find in turn based RPG's these days.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

I like both turn-based RPGs. Things like classic Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger or Breath of Fire are some of my all-time favorite.

Depending on the game, I like open-world RPGs too.
