Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Did Breath of the Wild live up to the hype for you?

Wasn't hyped for it, but I liked it a lot.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

No, when they first shown tidbits of it, I was really excited about potential avenues they could take and improve on usual 3D Zelda formula.

Sadly in the end, for me at least, it felt like a descent prototype for something that potentially could be much, much better in some future iteration, but ultimately, in current state, fails on so many accounts.

What accounts did it fail on so badly that you view it as only a decent prototype?

Not so badly, just too many of them. I have to be honest, I really don't have time or desire to get into another endless back and forth about what BotW lacks and does wrong, quit frankly I'm surprised usual suspect(s) didn't jumped in already to defend the game...

Because people know that the game is great so they don't need to prove anything to you.

Cool

Shit reading through this thread is making me want to buy it, and a Switch.

I have been a Nintendo gamer my whole life, and the Switch is the only Nintendo console I don't own because of my responsibilities as an adult. It has been hard to hear all of you and so many people enjoy this super experience with Zelda, my favorite series, after I decided to quit console gaming.

I played almost all the zelda games except The Wand of Gamelon, loyal to the bone on this series. I played TP and Skyward Sword for many many hours even when I was very busy with life. I've listened to the BOTW soundtrack many times while working, and I feel like I played the game somehow, but reading this thread I see that there are many surprises to enjoy, like it was with OoT. The magic of the game, all the secrets, that's what Zelda is all about.

It's a secret to... everybody. Even to me!

Please do.  While Breath of the Wild is a huge game that you will sink hundreds of hours into, it's really easy to pick up for an hour, get a lot done, and then come back to the next day or whenever you want.  The open world nature means that whatever exploration you're doing is always a positive, and the shrines make for quick, bite-sized gaming sessions that you can do when you get a moment or on breaks at work.

It truly will be the benchmark to come for many games (even though it does borrow heavily from a few well known titles). I said it then and I'll say it again...Zelda is worth the price of the Switch and the game, as every system seller should be.  I appreciate your commitment to your resposibilities, but it's time to reward yourself for all that hard work.

There were several things that I would like to see improved (Dungeons and a more present story), however, the Open World aspects were probably the best I've ever seen.

Tbh I did like BOTW when I played it and beat it. I do think it's a little bit overrated. While I think the concept of being able to explore in a non-linear way in a western RPG like the open world is amazing, the game just didn't have enough for me to justify a GOAT game type category for me especially when previous Zelda games did certain things far better than BOTW. I miss the huge and challenging dungeons from previous Zelda games, the world also felt far too empty with barely any interesting villages or people, I do wish there was a better story as well. Overall I think it's still a good game like 8/10 but not GOAT game like everyone says it is.

I actually hyped this game for myself far more than normal.  I saw that it was a special game from E3 2016 and I watched every minute of footage I could possibly find on youtube.  Not only did I watch all of the Nintendo Treehouse, but I watched a ton of different Youtuber's footage that were at E3.  I was so friggin' hyped for the game that I know I watched at least 10 hours of footage total.

My wife was like, "You should stop watching that game.  You're going to spoil the whole thing for yourself and then you won't enjoy it when it's released."

And I was like, "No it's just one tiny plateau area in the middle of the map.  The game is actually amazingly huge."

Did the game live up to all of my hype?  Hell, yes!  This is the Zelda game that I waited at least 25 years for.  In fact, my favorite Zelda is the first NES one.  This game gave me the feeling of freedom and exploration that the first Zelda gave me, but it came with modern graphics, huge scope, and an innovative physics engine.  I love Breath of the Wild.  It is my game of the decade, basically tied with Dark Souls.

I think I am kind of like that Star Wars fan that saw the first Star Wars in the theatre in the 70's.  They hated the prequels, but then came out in droves for The Force Awakens.  Breath of the Wild is my version of the Force Awakens.  I didn't like the 3D Zelda's I played.  But Breath of the Wild...this is a return to form for Zelda.  In fact, it's my second favorite Zelda.  I like it better than Link to the Past and Zelda 2, which are also games on my top 50 list.

Is BotW flawless?  No, but it's damn amazing.  It's a rare gem.  As I said this is my game of the decade.

Honestly the lead up to BOTW's release wasn't exactly "hype" for me, so much as nearly 3 years of excruciating frustration. They way they kept us in the dark for 18 months, skipped E3 2015, refused to give us a release date until the 11th hour, truly Nintendo at its most fucking annoying. Thank fuck the game turned out so great, as I don't think any game has pissed me off more in the lead up to release, though Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 will probably dethrone it for this dubious honour soon.

That's something you are doing to yourself because you create a strict priority order in your mind.

"This is a game that has my full attention despite not releasing anytime soon."

Of course that's going to be a taxing experience because you are constantly waiting for something that won't occur anytime soon. The absence of news is predictable, but you keep clinging to unrealistic expectations and hopes.

Play more Picross. That keeps your mind healthy.

I can't help the games I feel excited for. Nintendo (and all game companies) just shouldn't announce games years out and then not supply a steady stream of new material in the lead up to release.

Companies won't change, so the responsibility to make it easier for yourself is yours. You can do it, curl. Just one step at a time.

Might help if there was something, anything, to look forward to in the mean time. But we don't have release dates for anything I'd consider worth buying atm, nothing at all. :(
