I'm gonna suggest Dragon Quest XI if you didn't already play it on PS4. Or maybe even if you did play it on PS4.

I really don't mind the default joy con at all for the dpad button thing it has, but that Hori pad is around 20 or so from Amazon here could be worth checking out? I initially bought that along with the first joy con stick replacement that I was going to do, the intention was that I would buy a cheapo replacement joy con in case the repair went badly, but ... the repair was perfect but I just fell in love with the slightly different layout on the Hori joycon and the slight reduction of system weight because of the lack of HD rumble and battery pack inside that controller.

Yeah, I plan on getting that Hori controller at some point.

The only 2D game I have for Switch so far is Yoshi's Crafted World, and I got by fine using the left analogue for movement in that. If you play a lot of more classic 2D games I can see the lack of a D-Pad being an issue but it hasn't bothered me yet.

Yeah, for most sprite-based 2D games that require quick movements, I find an analog stick has too much travelling distance, and the 4 face buttons don't work well for diagonal directions.

128 GB (minimum) microSD card. You might even want a 200 GB or 256 GB card. Also get a screen protector. The dock isn't the kindest to the tablet. I'd also recommend some sort of carrying case, even if it's just for the Switch in handheld mode.
Yes, get a Pro Controller. The buttons on the JoyCons are so tiny. If you want additional Pro Controllers, a Hori Wired Controller would probably be just fine. It's only $20.
As for 1st-party games; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Maker 2. If you never got Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Some third-party multiplats worth playing include: Stardew Valley, the South Park RPGs, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Also OP; would you consider getting PS4/Xbone multiplats on your Switch for portability/motion controls/etc, or would you rather just buy those on your PS4/Xbone/PC if you have one?

Cos games like Doom 2016 and Hellblade are IMO among the best games on Switch.

While I have 2 gaming PC's in my flat just for me... I finished both of those titles on the Switch as well, Doom I finished on a plane with a little old lady next to me who was torn between wanting to give out about me stomping on demons skulls and not wanting to admit to looking over my shoulder at the screen of what I was playing. Gonna be honest... when I noticed she was looking over my shoulder I went outta my way to do the Bison jump stomp on things from above, just for extra gore. But yeah... got a PC that can chuck out Doom2016 with a frame rate well over 100fps but enjoyed every bit of it on the Switch at 30fps just because of how I was able to pocket it and play through the game, so many titles on my static consoles are great looking... but never get played.

Heck I have the full Witcher 3 GOTY version on my PS4 directly behind me here... still gonna pre order it on the Switch because I will actually get to play through it.

As for games, there are the usual suspects. The evergreens as they're called, the games that everyone buys the Switch for.
- Breath of the Wild
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Splatoon 2
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

As for the smaller, B-tier titles. The ones I definitely recommend are:
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses
- Xenoblade Chronicles 2
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
- Bayonetta 1 & 2
- Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
- Super Mario Party, if you have friends and family you can play with.

I also recommend plenty of good 3rd parties and indie titles:
- Sonic Mania
- Final Fantasy VII, IX, X & X-2.
- Shantae: Half Genie Hero & Pirate's Curse
- Crash N Sane Trilogy
- Octopath Traveler.

And those are the games I recommend the most.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is S-tier, Buddha (sorry Jesus)

Any good strategy or other recommended retro arcade stuff? I have a Switch Lite now. Big stuff are Mario Maker and Smash for me. I want to run some game tournament stuff.
