Today Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is remembered fondly by some of us N64 players, and yet it has always lived under the Shadow of one Golden Eye.

I remember being blown away by Turok's graphics, sense of scale, realistic violence and general freshness as my first first person shooter ever. Turok was one of my bragging rights go to games when I showed off to my PS1 owning friends the power of the N64. It was also a very difficult game with challenging platforming sections, difficult fights.

GE came afterwards and blew the doors out of the competition, yet I remember fondly Turok's water effects, lush (at the time) environments, and general open feeling of its levels. I feel it has actually aged better than Golden Eye as I find it a more engrossing experience to replay today. Holding an 85.0 metacritic rating, was Turok overrated or underrated?

Oh thank god. I thought you were talking about Retro Studios. Phew!

I much preferred Turok 2 to the original. That fog. It was bad, even for it's time. They did a great job of removing it,( and mostly improving the rest of the game ) in the sequel. I would say that base solely on it metacritic score, it's over rated. Decent game tho.

Chinese food for breakfast

I agree Turok 2 was better, also a showcase of Nintendo's 4*MB Ram pack, it was a game that wasn't possible on the PS1 or Saturn.

Turok was a fun experience when I played it over at a friend's house. It definitely has its issues but it delivered solid gameplay and some cool weapons. I voted justly rated.

The Turok series, 1, 2 and 3 were amazing games. Even though the 3rd one was a downgrade as they attempted to make it a openish world were some of the best games of there era in my opinion. I loved the universe. The trilogy needs a remake.

I didn't know what it is so I checked it out ... isn't that Doom with Dinosaurs instead ? (on first impressions)

I agree on the N64 version.

However, on PC the fog was much less, at the same level as it's successor (which also has again less fog than the console version). In other words, the console version is overrated, but the PC version is just right. Too bad that the pricetag is just plain wrong (20€/$ for either Turok or Turok 2 digitally nowadys? GTFO!)

And Bows and arrows, so you could also call it a linear version of Horizon: Zero Dawn, but with living instead of mechanic Dinosaurs.

It's justly rated, I'm surprised the MC score is as high as it is tbh.  I'd put it in the 75-80 category myself.  The thing Turok had going for it was it came at a time early in the N64's life where there was a dearth of software, especially quality 3rd party titles.  Most 3rd party games at that point were not all that great or just rushed ports from the arcade or other consoles.

Turok was also supposed to come out around the US launch of the N64 but got delayed to March '97 due to bugs and other issues.  It would've made for a helluva 1-2 punch if it had launched alongside Mario 64 and had a full year at retail before GoldenEye made it almost completely irrelevant. Turok was a breath of fresh air for its time, but it has not held up very well over time, as is the case with many games from early in the 32/64-bit gen.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I rated it overrated. Even back in around 1997 when i played it, the fog was horrendous and made it unplayable imo. I suppose it just got completely outclassed by Goldeneye. Its sequel, Seeds of evil, however was much better, great graphics, less fog (still bad though) great death animations, gore. Bad framerate though aswell. So yeah Turuk: Dinosaur hunter = overrated imo. Next
