I voted underrated. I still play this game while certain elements like story telling are very outdated it's exploration based level design and incredibly fast paced gameplay still make it fun to play now I recently got the HD version for switch. Also a lot has been made of the fog but no one brings up that goldeneyes jungle level looked far worse.

I though you were comparing Turok as overrated vs Dino Hunter as underrated and would complain you didn't had Dino Crisis in your thread =]
I would say Turok was well regarded on its own right.

I can't make a judgement on Dino Crisis as I never played a game in that series. My PS1 one time was mostly compromised of JRPGs then, with the occasional Resident Evil, Tekken, GT play through. But I understand it was like RE with Dino's at least from EGM  mag clips in those days .

That is a good "general description" of it =]

Ah, Turok. I replayed that last year and finished it for the first time in my life. Back then I rented it from a buddy but couldn't finish it. Still enjoyed it, though! Turok 2 is the same story, but I must replay it yet. Great shooters, cool lore, heavy atmosphere, good music.

I loved these games on N64 and still loved them on Switch. The music is fantastic. Best weapon ever in Cerebral Bore. Tho the final boss to Turok 2 still sucks. These are still very fun arcadey FPS games overall but some flaws do show with its age. They fixed some of this by showing you where to go with a menu option. It's nice to play Turok 2 in a higher framerate than 4FPS lol. I love it every time I hear him say "I AM TUROK!" I have never read the old 1950s comics tho. Also the GBC game of Turok 2 I remember being fun as well. I never bothered with any game outside the first 2 (and the GBC game). If they were to make a new game in the series I want them to make it closer to Doom in playstyle. Twitchy gunplay and shooting the shit in an arcadey way. It doesn't take itself overly seriously but also not the cringe too self-aware humor either.

Definitely underrated, but it didn't mark me as much as resident evil, tomb raider, final fantasy 8, metal gear and silent hill on the ps1, the only N64 game that I thought was above those was Mario 64, both Turok and Golden eye were still great.

I loved the game back then, it was one of my first N64 games. I liked the open level design, cool enemies, crazy weapons and the gore. But it aged poorly. I played the remastered version on PC a few years back and couldn't motivate myself to complete it.

Yeah for its time it was great, I couldn't imagine myself playing those old games now, even remastered, cartoonish games like Mario 64 age better, because they don't need to look realistic, with a nice PC with AA its enough even in 2020, but those old games that were going for realistic style nowadays look horrendous, tech has advanced far too much, most people have nostalgia glasses, go and try one of those games now on a big screen all you're going to see is jaggies everywhere, and faces that look like a huge cube.

I wouldn't even go that far, I tried replaying assassins creed 1 recently and I couldn't do it, animations were terrible, voice acting was terrible, in my mind it was great, but our brains adapt to the new graphics.

That's the reason I only play old cartoonish games, or 2d side scrollers, those age well too. To this day I still play the original NES Mario bros, must have played that game 100 times already, others like Contra, streets of rage, Galaxy etc, those are still playable.

I remember playing Turok 2 with the N64 expansion pak for "high res"graphics - 240p I think? Anyway it was pretty but the higher res meant that it chugged pretty hard. It was my first lesson in resolution coming at the expense of performance.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Nice bump of a thread from last year.

I'd say justly rated or even slightly underrated. It was fast-paced, gory, and it was fun to play with the cheat codes. In fact, I'd say it holds up better now than Goldeneye does.
