Some think of this Wii sequel as more of a 1.5 than a 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2?

I'll drop a few hints for my next few as well:

#19: The first time this long-running RPG series had multiple versions.
#18: One of the greatest fighters of all time, with a thriving community even today
#17: One of the most unique modern RPGs, a love letter to SNES era RPGs
#16: Small robot cleans house, interacts with some of the most unique characters ever
#15: The latest entry in one of the original RPG series, with a Switch port coming next year

19.  Final Fantasy X-2
18.  Street Fighter 2
17.  Octopath Traveler
16.  Katamari Damacy
15.  Dragon Quest XI

Around the Network

Alright time for a new set of hints:

#19: The highest ranked new game on my list this year. Robot dinosaurs.

#18: Features some of the most famous scenes in video game history, including the burning of the main characters home village by the villain.

#17: A court mage with delusions of grandeur destroys the world halfway through the game.

#16: A direct sequel that picks up immediately after the first game.

#15: You're just a dream.

Dragon Quest V?

Not quite. It is a JRPG, but from a different series.

Nope. This one is a PS4 exclusive.

Correct on everything except 16. X-2 is nowhere near my top 50.

Grandia
(YoY: -1)

I did not play Grandia back when it was originally released in the late 90s on either the Saturn or the PlayStation. I didn't even know of it until I happened to come across it years later on the PS3 online store, and I purchased it mostly because I happened to be looking for new JRPGs to play at the time. I had absolutely no expectations for the game, and for that reason it is easily one of the biggest positive surprises I've ever had in terms of video games.

It's not a perfect game by any means. The graphics haven't aged particularly well, and the voice acting can charitably be called awkward. However, those are things that rarely bother me all that much, as both aspects are just something you come to expect with games from this era, especially as almost everything else about the game is wonderful. The story and characters are great, the gameplay is a lot of fun with a nice amount of depth, and the soundtrack is really good as well.

Total Annihilation
(YoY: -2)

Although Command & Conquer is my all time favourite RTS series, the RTS game I love the most is Total Annihilation. A huge part of this is its scale, which is something that hadn't really been done before in any RTS title. The ability to build hundreds of units and send them across the map to battle an equally massive force is still awesome all these years later. This is one of those games that I can just return back to over and over again without ever getting bored.

The music and gameplay are both great in my opinion, and playing with friends on LAN is just the icing on the cake. It makes the game even more fun, especially when people start putting together some of the game's ridiculous superweapons that can decimate the enemy clear across the map.

#19
Horizon Zero Dawn
(YoY: NEW)

This is the best game of 2017, and the best open world game I've ever played. From its visuals to its music, from gameplay to story and characters, Horizon Zero Dawn is an absolutely amazing game. Guerrilla Games as a developer has always shown potential for great things, but up until Zero Dawn they've just never quite gotten there in my opinion. The Killzone-games were good, but never really anything beyond that. Horizon is the title that proved that they could do something truly excellent.

There has never been another game with quite the same style and atmosphere as this one. It doesn't necessarily do anything new or unique with its gameplay or open world design, but it uses those existing elements in ways that gives the game its own identity that no other game has. The world is gorgeous and wonderfully realized, the characters very well written, and the narrative and backstory are among my favourites in any video game. This is a near perfect open world game, and the best game of its kind I've played thus far. And the Frozen Wilds expansion is excellent as well.
