Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can NINTENDO make traditional home console that sells well?

Atleast 50 million?

Yes 25 38.46%

No 40 61.54%

In the future. And by selling well I mean atleast 50 million consoles.

This would most certainly require as good 3rd party support as Playstation/XBOX gets = the hardware should be as powerfull. I think that the majority of Playstation/XBOX audience prefers PlayStation/XBOX exclusives over NINTENDO's, so it would be hard to "cannibalize" their console sales. But powerfull hardware would allow NINTENDO to make games with "better" graphics, and if they focused more on story and characters than before, atleast part of the PlayStation/XBOX audience could move to NINTENDO.

This would obviously require investments to graphics and story (= new studios) and hardware. But I think that NINTENDO has to make these changes in the future, because their exclusives cant compete with the combined effect of 3rd party games and PlayStation(/XBOX) exlusives.

All consoles could be hybrid consoles in the future, but the other points that I made also stand true in that situation.

Maybe they could, but they definitely have much higher chanches for succes and higher sales with different approach compared to Sony/MS.

I think they could, they just need to bring the games. Switch is Nintendo's lightning in a bottle, as it is decent hardware with a great library thus far.

However, if it's just another black box with 18 1GB RAM chips, and a 10TF GPU, they'd need to really focus on getting all 3rd party content day and date with the others, and have that 1st party content on deck. They'd also have to at least offer the basics of what Sony and MS are offering with their consoles.

And uh... "NINTENDO has to make these changes in the future, because their exclusives cant compete with the combined effect of 3rd party games and PlayStation(/XBOX) exlusives."

Well...they've done this before, and are still doing it lol. Nintendo 1st party games aren't like the other 1st party games, they usually are often the only reason most Nintendo fans buy those consoles. They have a larger and more reliable lineup of games that continuously sell well. Microsoft's biggest threat isn't Nintendo, it's Sony.

But I'd like to see them at least attempt a clone of MS and Sony's black box styled consoles. Most people forget, Nintendo did make a traditional console, and was more powerful than the PS2 and could hold its own against the OG Xbox, and it, units wise (not financially) failed compared to other devices. But, I guess you could say that it failed because of the Mini DVD format, which is understandable. So I'd like to see how they'd approach it.

But if I'm being honest with myself, I'd rather them just continue with the Switch idea until the end of time. It's too good of an idea to just drop all of a sudden.

At this point yes i think they can, but i don't think they should. It's good to have something that tries to do something different

Yes, they could. But the people in charge don't know how to do it. People like to point to N64 and Gamecube as examples of how they can't do it, but those two consoles had something "different" about them that hindered their success. The N64 used carts and had a funky controller and the Gamecube used mini-DVD disc and also had a funky controller that excluded two full sized analog sticks. It also didn't play DVD movies which was the standard at the time.

Imagine if Nintendo had released the PS4 as it currently is. Same design, same power, same everything, only it also had Nintendo exclusives. What the hell would Sony and Microsoft do to combat something like that? They'd get annihilated because you'd have the best third party versions AND Nintendo games in one box It would be the perfect console.

I don't think the world has 50 million Nintendo fans so no.

They could, but I don't think they have to or should with the hybrid concept. Having 2 separate consoles would split development resources.

But I am pretty sure that the majority of people who like 3rd party games prefer PlayStation/XBOX exclusives over NINTENDO's, since they are quite similiar.

Surely they could. But even if they accompany the PS5-release with a Nintendo console which has the same specs, it will go differently. 3rd-parties would port some stuff. It would sell bad (because the people wanting 3rd-party getting the PS5) and 3rd-parties therefore would neglect the console. In the end it would be Nintendo-only. So, while technically it would be easy, they would fail with such a concept.

But NINTENDO's consoles that rely (solely) on their exclusives don't sell well. Their highest selling exclusives sell about 20 million, so logically that's how high they can drive the console sales with them. So how can they compete with combined 3rd party and SONY/XBOX exclusives? Wii didn't achieve its high sales because of Mario/Zelda. Maybe Wii Fit, but I don't think you mean those kind of games.
