Restricting the release of quality software so that lower-quality titles can sell is a terrible and backward way to do business. If Nintendo believed that, they wouldn’t be releasing the SNES and NES classics. Scheduling is obviously a thing, but Nintendo would be a ridiculous company to do something like block the release of a Final Fantasy so some indie RPG could sell. On the Wii, when there were gaps in the release schedule, Nintendo did a good job of filling those with VC titles.

People are not buying a game they don’t want because of the lack of a game they do want. Instead, they’ll look on other platforms.

Shovel Knight (91% on Metacritic), Steamworld Dig 2 (88%), Steamworld Heist: Ultimate Edition (91%), Stardew Valley (87%), Rocket League (86%), Darkest Dungeon (84%), Sonic Mania (86%), Owlboy (86%), Enter the Gungeon (88%), Snipper Clips + (84%), Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time (86%), Hollow Knight (86%), etc. can all easily compete with the quality of Nintendo's classics.

I'd much rather play new games instead of games I played years ago, sadly I seem to be in the minority with that.

To be fair, most of the mentioned indie games sold really well on Switch, many even outselling the PS4 versions.

The Virtual Console is a BASIC feature that launched with the Wii, and was released near launch for the 3DS and Wii U. Instead of getting rid of VC support, Nintendo should make it the best it's ever been. Imagine a Switch VC with NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Wii, GB, GBC, GBA, Genesis, and Arcade games. And you could even have more platforms than that. Wii U and DS probably wouldn't work though due to the dual screen nature.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 151 million (was 73, then 96, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 57 million (was 60 million, then 67 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

When they do bring the virtual console to the Switch, I hope every game is upscaled to 1080p.

It might hurt indie sales, but they'll still sell enough for most developers to be happy. And for both Switch owners and Nintendo, VC would be great.

I see your point. Also must be disheartening for indies to have their games being outsold by 30 year old ports. Its just gonna be Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, Square etc usual suspects anyway. I don't need to buy them again.

The switch is the console people love to love, i know i do. For me i think one reason for this,  and perhaps maybe overlooked is the e-shop. The e-shop has never been so vibrant with a wide array of quality games, indies are thriving. Nintendo has done a fine job gathering this amazing collection of indie games and as a result indies are finding unprecedented sales success. This sales success encourages more companies to release games for the switch and helps build hype for the system. every week the switch gets free positive publicity when  x indie says the sold x amount of games on switch.

So my argument against VC is that the average gamer only has limited funds to spend on games, when choosing to buy an e-shop game do the choose unknown game about golf or one of the greatest games of all time? Probably they will opt for the guarantee of nostalgia and quality. Suddenly this could lead to indies no longer finding success on switch, becomes less appealing to release games on the system. With this the good publicity storys dry up and the hype for the system start to fade. I genuinely feel VC will have a negative impact on switch, what do you think?

Had thought of this a few times during the last 9 months of Switch, I would even imagine there might have been a deal struck with the early adopting developers of the system that Nintendo would specifically hold off releasing their VC games into the system for the first 12 months and leave it as just nintendo AAA games and the rest of the system "available funds" as you put it, to the 3rd parties and indies who are willing to create games for the system, it's win/win/win

Indies win because they get a Nintendo quality system to get their games to more people with little competition other than from other indie games.

Gamers win because they are encouraged to take a look at other slightly less famous small titles when they want a break from things like Splatoon and Doom so rather than going for the known quality of something like Mario 64 or another run through Lylat wars now we have things like Rocket League and Stardew Valley to keep us entertained and forge new gaming memories rather than default back to our roots.

and finally of course, Nintendo wins, because they get a system with a massive array of varied titles which everyone seems to have found something to enjoy (except for WWE fans) and later on down the line they can introduce the VC to the Eshop to have a second wave of interest to an already super popular system.

Nintendo were very clear about having a plan for games being released on the Switch for the first few years of its existence, not just release it when there was games ready for launch, people (including myself) thought that the March launch date was a poor choice but it looks like Nintendo weren't lying when they said they had a plan and now each week we get upwards of 10 new titles on the system, and I get a very tasty bite of humble pie to enjoy!

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Its better to have both options though, indies still did relatively good on the WiiU of all consoles

I want VC,but that is not a bad point at all. I look at the weekly top sellers on Wii U eShop and for year I see many eShop games at high positions on the ranking for several weeks while many indies and thirds struggling to hold on the ranking. I still want VC on the Switch and I want it to evolve and start offering Gamecube games, but maybe if they replaced the usual pricing system to an subscription system would easy on that problem.
