Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why Does Wii Really Get A Bad Rap?

Because it was a bad console? It had some good games but it just wasn't a good console to play them on. The UI sucked, it never had an achievement system, an account system, a friend system, a party system, a party voice chat system. Did it even have Netflix etc, I can't remember. It also always had the worst version of multiplat games (ie. the best games) if it even had them at all. The controllers were atrocious as well.

Are we talking about Nintendo Switch? I can't tell.

It was oversold towards the beginning. It seemed like an amazing console with huge potential for some great Nintendo, and while it got quite a few, the majority of its library was third party shovelware titles that were strictly aimed at casuals. Outside of SMO2 and Skyward Sword, the console really did lose its magic after 2008.

I guess I can’t really complain though; it was because of the Wii’s shortcomings that I transitioned to being an almost exclusively Playstation gamer. I’ve been pretty satisfied with that choice ever since.

It wasn't conventional enough for many people. I personally liked it as it had a shit ton of great games and most of the ones I like are 3rd party and not casual party games.

For me it gets a bad rap because they shoehorned waggle into every fucking core IP they owned. For games like Wii Sports etc. waggle worked because the type of game was invented with that in mind but Zelda? Mario? Who the fuck thought shaking a controller violently was easier or more practical than pressing a button? It made no sense.

No one. That's why Nintendo didn't do that...

And what button do I push in Galaxy to jump into a warp star (or whatever it was called)? What button do I press in Odyssey to throw Mario's hat in a perfect circle through the flowers?

It had some good games, but not enough. A lot of games were targeted at a different audience (which doesn't make them bad games, but those games had little to no appeal to me).

My favorite games on the console: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Xenoblade Chronicles, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 and Mario Kart Wii.

I think in a lot of people's cases it was judging a book by it's cover. When you went into stores, you would see the core Nintendo games (which most of them were good) and then a large number of shovel ware titles. So people got the impression that there were only a handful of good games and everything else was garbage. The multiplat games didn't look as good on the Wii, nor did they have the same online functionality as their PS3/360 counterparts (at least in most cases)

Personally the Wii is one of my favorite consoles, but I understand why people had a bad impression of it. Nintendo really pushed the family friendly/casual tone that generation and that pushed off a lot of the gaming community. It had so many hidden gems, but most people didn't know they existed and didn't care to search them out.

Well he's right that you don't shake the controller violently to do those things

Well first of all just because you feel the need to violently shake the controller doesn't really say anything about anything except you.

Its like me saying its annoying that I have to punch the buttons on the PS4 controller. I can do that, but I don't need to.

You can do a circle motion with the analog stick and then press the button to throw the cap in a perfect circle in Mario Odyssey. Its a bit clumsy, but you can do it.

No, he's not. There was no button substitute to do those things. Other examples? In Galaxy, when you had to ride those water waves, you WERE FORCED to use motion controls to steer Mario. The same thing for the plastic hamster ball later on. Would it have been easier to use an analog stick? Would it have been more practical? Of course. Why didn't they allow us that option? Because they thought motion controls were better. It's bullshit.

You steer with motion controls, you don't shake the Wii motes violently to do these actions.
