Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 VS Switch lifetime sales, which console will sell the most?

What do you expect?

NSW will win by a huge margin 53 16.06%

NSW will win by a small margin 75 22.73%

PS4 will win by a small margin 75 22.73%

PS4 will win by a huge margin 117 35.45%

Sorry, no troll XB1 option. :P Oh wait... 10 3.03%

Total:330

I feel like this thread will be very fun to look back on. I myself give a leaning to Switch victory but close to a toss up.

I also feel that people are underestimating Nintendo's ability to sell consoles. It seems to me that many people think that 3DS and Wii U sales are the norm while the DS and Wii sales are anomalies and one and done deal. To me it is the other way around but most people do not see that. Nintendo has made more successful systems than they did failures. Nintendo is the only publisher in the world that can have a console that sells on their own games alone. The power is all in Nintendo's hands and right now Nintendo is doing everything right. The sales of the Switch reflect this.

Also for those who predict that the Switch will do less than 100 million I have nothing to say to you other then that you really have no idea what is going on. Nintendo would have to sabotage their own product for that to happen. I hope you change your prediction because by the end of the Switch's 2nd year that prediction is going to look very wrong.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

The Switch hitting 100m has everything to do with how long Nintendo supports it. If we have a Switch 2 around the launch of the PS5 and Whatever-the-fuck-Xbox-is-next, I don't think it will have enough time.

Considering Switch rarely if ever outsells the ps4 despite launching just 8 months ago iand having its heaviest hitters bar pokemon released for the system already i'd say PS4 outsells the switch by about 2:1 (Switch 70-80m, PS4 140-160m)

1. I am bookmarking this.
2. PS4 by a landslide. I still don't think the Switch will crack 100 million LT, and the PS4 will easily doo 120million+. Its simply a more atractive offering for the average joe, when you take into consideration the price and multimedia capabilities.

The Switch could do more than the 3DS, but I doubt it will blow past it. IMO we need at leats the next full year to have a somewhat clearer picture, but right now the PS4 is the likely winner.

So in your world a PS5 will release at latest 2020 so that will mean the Switch 2 will release  around the same time. This will give the Switch a 3-4 lifespan at the biggest. The only way I see that happening is if Nintendo is stupid. There would be no advantage of releasing at such a time. If the PS5 releases in 2019 then this is even more absurd.

oh boy. Ok try to separate the predictions you think will happen from predictions you want to happen. Your predictions will be a lot more accurate that way.

Easily PS4 unless Nintendo has some MAJOR tricks up their sleeves, but I think they played most of their cards up front

Rarely? ... It's outsold the PS4 almost every month in NPD and Japan. Like, what? How is that rarely?

Also, it's so weird to me that people think a first year console with huge supply issues up until recently should be outselling a console in it's best year. Why do so many people think new consoles automatically outsell old ones, or that it's expected for new consoles to do so?

For christ's sakes, there are some people in this thread who have gone as far as to say that the Switch will decrease from now on because it's "biggest exclusives" have already released. Really? Consoles don't work like that. Odyssey isn't the Switch's biggest exclusive either, neither is Zelda.

Say PS4 will outsell Switch all ya want, I voted that in the pole. But please people, have some common sense.

The world is a lot bigger than Nintendo's two strongest markets. And as long as the Switch sells more in Japan than Europe  (the latter doesn't have all that much supply issues in most big countries). PS4 can relatively easy compete worldwide with the Switch. As it stands now European PS4 sales usually double the Switch European sales and that's enough to overcome NPD losses (usually by only 25k tops a month) and Switch outselling PS4 in Japan.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

You have this knack of generalizing. And always talking like everyone has some sort of anti nintendo agenda.

I think what I said is clear.... less than a year into the launch of any new hardware is too short a time to be making generation defining predictions as fact. Its ok to make a prediction and no one will argue with that. But its foolhardy to state said prediction like its a fact or to talk like you have some sort of inside knowledge on what everyone else thinks.

Take note, I am not one of those that feel the switch will not sell well... I won't be surprised if it even outsells the PS4 at the end of its lifetime. Makes no difference to me to be honest.

Lets just end this here.... and agree to disagree as always.

You certainly have an anti-Nintendo agenda, so playing innocent isn't going to matter.

If it doesn't bother you if Switch sells more than the PS4 lifetime, then let me make my prediction.

You don't have to believe me;

  1. the first two consoles I owned in my life were nintendo consoles. And my all time favorite game(s) are usually games of the Zelda franchise.
  2. Albeit not for myself, but I have purchased a Wii, WiiU and recently a Nintendo Switch for nephews, nieces, cousins....etc because I flet that it was a better fit considering how old they were and that I know their parents really just wanted something good to occupy them.
I am not a multiconsole type gamer, I barely have enough time to play the games I own (eg. I just came around to playing infamous and I have owned that game since 2014). What this means is that I am extremely analytical of which platform I support, and by support I mean with my own money and for myself.
I do have an issue with how certain fans talk, and I do have my reservations of the kinda decisions nintendo makes. And like you, I do make my own predictions. Sometimes I am right and sometimes I am wrong.
Difference between us, is that if your predictions aren't in line with what I personally believe, it doesn't make you an anti anything in my book. We just think differently. And are entitled to.
Imagine that all this stemmed from your prediction and me simply saying that its too early to make the kinda claim you were making to back your prediction. Nothing wrong with prediction, I even agree with it and also believe that the NS will most likely outsell the PS4.
If all this makes me have an anti nintendo agenda? then by all means.... more power to you.

Lol i could give a fuck about which outsells which, all i know is ps4 outsells the switch by a lot nearly every week. I'd bet money that my prediction will be way closer to reality than whatever yours is.

Yes, the Switch rarely outsells the PS4. It destroys PS4 in Japan, thats correct. It has beaten PS4 in NPD by very small margins a few times this year yes. Thing is, I wasn't talking about those specific countries, you're responding to me as if I did. Why is that? What I said was correct in every conceivable way. Switch rarely outsells PS4, if ever.

The thing about losing to Ps4 in its best year is that we are now in year 4 of a continual incline in sales. The PS4 still hasn't peaked, it has every chance to sell better than it has this year in 2018.

By the way it is fucking hilarious that Nintendo fans think Switch will hit 100 million lol, i mean it took years of constant, in your face success for most Nintendo/Xbox fans to accept that PS4 will pass 100 million easily, yet 8 months in people think its locked that Switch will get there AND outsell the PS4 despite the Ps4 continuing to sell not just more, but A LOT more. Shows how warped their realities are.

By the way the recent Nintendo consoles have peaked in year 2 or 1

Wii (2006) - peaked in 2008

Wii U (2012) - peaked in 2013

3DS (2011) - peaked in 2013

DS is actually the only one that didn't and I'm on mobile and I don't feel like going to check but I believe it peaked in 2007, if not 2008
