In the past the handheld Zelda games shortened the wait between the home console Zelda games:

  • 1998: Ocarina of Time
  • 2000: Majora's Mask
  • 2001: Oracle of Ages/Seasons
  • 2002: The Wind Waker
  • 2004: The Minish Cap
  • 2006: Twilight Princess
  • 2007: Phantom Hourglass
  • 2009: Spirit Tracks
  • 2011: Skyward Sword
  • 2013: A Link Between Worlds
  • 2015: Tri-Force Heroes
  • 2017: Breath of the Wild

A new "Legend of Zelda" game on the scale of BotW (or even bigger) will take some years to develop. So which year do you expect it?

Do you think Nintendo will released a smaller / less ambitious Zelda game before that to shorten the wait? Or can we only expect remasters of old content (f.e. Skyward Sword HD) and perhaps some BotW DLCs until the next big Zelda?

Personally I hope they do a 3D Zelda game on 3DS (about the size of Majora's Mask, perhaps a bit bigger would be fine). And either 2018 or 2019 would be fine.

I expect there to be a Skyward Sword HD remake sometime soon, maybe next year or the year after. Perhaps another 3DS or Switch spinoff is possible too. The next mainline Zelda game i expect to be in the vein on BotW and release in the last 2 years of the Switch, at best.

I voted 2025 by accident. 2020.

Does Link's crossbow training count as a Zelda title?

I wish they did a quick Majora's Mask style sequel to Breath of the Wild for holiday 2019, but we all know that isn't happening. We either get a top-down Zelda in 2019 or 2020 (which I don't want), or wait for the next 3D one in 2021 or 2022.

I think the quick-turnaround Majora's Mask sequel is the right play. Reuse the assets from Breath of the Wild, but give us some new dungeons, mechanics/items, bosses, etc. If Nintendo is serious about supporting Switch consistently I really think it needs to take an aggressive approach.

So my hope is holiday 2019.

If they do a 2D-Zelda in between 3D-Zeldas as some suggested then 2018 or 2019. A remake of an earlier game might come 2018, so 2019 sounds better. A new full-blown 3D-game does not release before 2020, probably later.

10 years greatest game event!

I'm going with 2022. But I  think it will be for BOTW what MM has been for OoT, honestly. I think the game will be smaller and a bit more condense: smaller world but filled with more stuff and some very innovative and new gameplay elements

The next mainline game will likely come 3 years after BotW in 2020 and use the same engine fully optimized for the Switch.

This is not including remasters keep in mind.

I hope as long as its needed for them to forget the femlink propagandists.

But on a serious note, I think Skyward Sword HD is going to come up next in 2019.
