Gens are dead?

Yes 32 16.84%

No 114 60.00%

Does it even matter? 44 23.16%

Total:190

Until there is more consoles in "gen 9" then yes "gen 9" doesn't exist.

We can't categorise Switch into a generation before we have information for whether it even belongs in said generation.

As it stands it's plausible that Switch could be:

Closer in release date to ps4/xbo then ps5/xb2.
Share more of it's software library with ps4/xbo then ps5/xb2.
Spend most of it's life against ps4/xbo before the launch of ps5/xb2.

A generation with a single platform is meaningless, currently there is no such thing as generation 9, that'll be determined at a later date.

But regardless, console generations as a whole will be dead soon enough anyway.

I think generations has to do with the technology inside.

"our box can do this new methode of rendering, such and such, this and that, which is new compaired to last gen"

Also generations are about which products your up against.

Switch isnt 9th generation, if it spends most of its lifetime competeing against the PS4/XB1 that are considered 8th gen.

Switch belongs to the same generation it spends most of time with.

Also apart from being portable, I dont think the Switch, in terms of graphics is able to do 1 thing that the PS4/XB1 cant.

Nothing that makes you go "okay this is next gen stuff".

If it was to do with the technology inside, then the 2DS/3DS/Wii U wouldn't have been lumped in with the Playstation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.

And if it was about the technology inside, then the Switch would be Generation 8 as that is where it's hardware feature set relative to the competition sits.

So recently I've seen a few posts stating things like, "Switch sales shouldn't be compared to ps4 because it's gen 9" or " gen 9 is here alreadý" etc.

I really think people should realize gens are now dead, Switch is just Nintendo's 7th gen console, the way technology advances so quick and PC upgrades available that surpass console makes "gens" dead. "Next gen" is just a marketing slogan so people think oh new console, Next gen so better graphics!!

So yeah I believe gens are dead, it's far too muddled nowadays with Xbox one X and switch.

Thoughts?

Lol sweet summer child, brace yourself when PS5 comes out then.

Similarly the "genz are the deadz" is a nonsensical marketing slogan by Microsoft PR. I don't think platforms in the 2nd or 3rd place decide when a new gen starts or not.

The Switch is an 8th gen console as it competes with the PS4 and Xbone (but yes technical wise it's closer to Gen 7, but competes with Gen 8 consoles). The Xonex is a mid gen refresh no matter what Microsoft claims about forward compatibility, they will have a hard cut off at some point, no one wants to be held back by 2013 hardware forever.

What Sony has said 10 years ago is becoming true, this time they will really decide when next gen starts. It's a shame that MS instead of going early with Xbox 2, decided to ruin their chances with a $500 mid gen refresh. It's still 2-3 years out but PS5 is already set to dominate next gen.

Thats what I believe.

8th gen:

Wii U + Switch

PS4/PS4s/PS4pro

Xb1/Xb1s/Xb1x

9th gen starts when Playstation 5, Xbox Two, Switch 2 release.

Switch is 9th gen. Ps4pro and xbonex are 8.5th gen simple as that. Gens don't have to be unique in timeline it has happened before gen 9 can start even if it's primetime for gen 8. This just means gen 9 will last longer until the final competitor releases gen 9. And ninty can again start gen 10 even with gen 9 PS and Xbox in their primes IMHO

Just a guy who doesn't want to be bored. Also

I don't think it was really feasible to them to release Xbox Two before 2020. The 7nm node will go into mass production in 2019 and certainly be used exclusively for smartphone chips (highest margin) for a year, while the TSMC 10nm node that is rdy now is not designed for big chips - it's smartphone only. So a 2018 release would use 16nm process and either be really expensive to produce until they can shrink it down or not be much faster than the XxX now.

Additionally Sony put out the Pro last year making a potential 2018 X2 look less like a new gen.

Btw AMD might revolutionize the whole concept of these chips by 2020 by making CPU/GPUs modular and interconnected with the "infinity fabric" like their new Epyc design for servers, which can lower costs alot.

So many arguments last gen from people saying Wii U was 8th gen. So switch is 9th gen. Starting the party early doesn't mean there is no party.

PS4 pro and PS4 are exactly the same just more power and different casing.

Xbone X and XB1 are exactly the same just more power and different casing.

Wii U and Switch are solar systems apart. They're different generations.

Gens exist and Switch is the first 9th generation console. PS5 will be the next one.

The Xbox 2 in 2018/2019 would sell much better even at $499 than what Xonex will do. No matter how they slice it it's a mid gen refresh designed to run Xbone games at 4K. I predict the Xbox brand to be in a lot of trouble in a few years time, the timing for their nextbox is already screwed. Releasing in the same quarter as PS5 is bad, releasing a year later is suicide, releasing 2+ years later: why bother. They needed to do what they did with 360.

My prediction for the Xonex is that initially sales will be amazing, all the Xbone hardcore will get one, that's already a few million, but by early 2018 sales will drop fast as mainstream/casual doesn't move.

AMD's next gen memory also sounds exciting, I read they'll put and stack the RAM directly on top of the processor, but I think it's something much further out and after HBM3.
