The whole concept of "generations" was made up by someone who made arbitrary decisions as to which console belongs to what generation.. It's never been clear. It's never been obvious. It's always been bullshit.

Don't believe me? Try to get this thread to come to a consensus of which generation the Gameboy belongs to. Try to explain how the Atari 2600 and the Atari 5200 are a part of the same generation. Explain how the Virtual Boy cleanly fits into all of this mess, and doesn't disrupt the "generation" of either Nintendo's home consoles or handhelds. You can't do it. You won't do it. Because there is no answer, and most importantly even if you had an answer, it doesn't matter at all.

Guys it's not listed as a 8th generation video game console on the official Wikipedia site. Only reason for that is that is considered as a 9th generation video game console. And at this point Wikipedia hasn't made a site for the 9th generation video game consoles, they will probably wait until the next Playstation and Xbox consoles will release.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighth_generation_of_video_game_consoles

Who cares what Wikipedia says? That's literally just some person deciding what console belongs to what generation. They're making it up. Putting it in Wikipedia doesn't make it fact.

I'd say we're in Gen 8, Phase 2

I play games from all generations. I have a console for ANY game that comes out at this point in time. Generations are meaningless. The "PS5" will be nothing more than a new Pro while the old pro becomes the new low end and the OG PS4 is phased out.

If you cannot see this by now, you are in denial
regardless of what Sony says. I suspect Nintendo to follow suit with the Switch.

You think people are "in denial" unless they agree with your future predictions? Yeah... that's all it is, a prediction

Think about it.  This was the reason for 86x architecture.  This ensures full BC back to the OG PS4, X1, and Switch (probably).  The architecture never changes now, but the amount of power does.  Furthermore the X1X is supposedly not fully utilizing the GPU due to a CPU bottle neck or the lowest common denominator factor of the OG X1 (choose whichever you prefer to believe, I think it is a little of both).  The same applies to the PS4 pro to a lesser extent.

I see the "PS5" being the new 4K machine, the Pro and X1X eventually being the 1080p machine for PS5 games, and OG PS4 will cease to exist.  We have already seen it begin, so all I am saying is that the writing is on the wall.

So yes, it is a prediction.  However it is a highly probable one that no one can deny the possibility of.  😉

"solar systems apart"  (in terms of capabilities)....

< pic removed >

Differnce between 176 Gflops (wii U) and 397 Gflops (docked switch) => one solar system apart.

Its still less than 1/4th of a PS4, the switch belongs to the 8th gen.

Power doesn't define generations.

They're complety different systems. Wii U games don't work.

New system, new library, new layout, completely different controls, different philosophy, no BC. How exactly are you comparing this to Pro and XB1X?

Come on now.

Im not compairing it with them.

Im saying Nintendo had started 8th gen early, flopped, and released early another system.

They had 2 systems in 1 gen.

We re still in 8th gen, and the main competitors of the Switch are the PS4 & XB1, as it will be for most of its life.

Thus the switch is part of the 8th gen.

In my experience...

"Console generations" are akin to comic book "ages." They are only easy to truly identify well after the fact. (Well, we can sort of determine when they start easier with consoles at least.) They feed into the basic human need to categorize everything, leading to shorter terms for swifter communication. As such, the idea of "console generations" won't go away until consoles go away, even if "forward-looking" PR men for the big companies try to say otherwise.

Generations are usually defined by a time period, not a new level of tech. The most popular and like-powered home consoles are grouped together, and those that don't conform are slotted in arbitrarily. A good indicator of a new gen is when AAA multiplats use the most powerful systems as their base, and older systems get gimped ports or none at all.

Xbox one is MS's 3rd gen console, PS4 is 4th gen and Switch is 7th gen...in the 9th generation.

Ie. Their 8th Gen machine flopped. So they released a successor 4 and a half years later, their 9th gen machine.

Their 9th.

But as a whole, it belongs to the 8th gen of consoles.

You can make more than 1 console, that are both in the same generation of things.

Only if it's a handheld. If you release a successor to a console it's the next generation. That's what generations are defined by, successors. Babyboomers and millenials are alive at the same time so by your logic you can call them the same generation. It's just not how it works.
