For those saying that Nintendo will move SMO for holidays.
When did Nintendo delayed a game after giving a precise date for its release? Lemme guess... Never?

November 20, 2015.

Totally forgot this one. Yeah, but they later confessed that were many missing features in this game and that the delay was necessary. Given the time that was in development I wouldn't doubt about that.

Can someone update the thread title? The rumor was already debunked.

If any game from this year were to move to next year, it would be Fire Emblem Warriors imo.  Not only is it niche, its also relatively unremarkable from an objective stance.

An epic RPG taking place in massive open spaces set on the backs of enormous creatures that endlessly roam a sea of clouds?  THAT is marketable in an agressive market.  And with s bit more polish, the visuals will look very nice and for this to run on a 6" tablet will be regarded as very impressive.

Fire Emblem Warriors is...a Warriors game.  With Fire Emblem characters.  It will do well enough, but that's not going to draw the eye of any non-FE fans.  Yeah, Hyrule Warriors did rather well for a Warriors game but let's not kid ourselves, Zelda is much more mainstream than FE, on top of being closer in gameplay to Warriors than FE is, making the difference more palatable even if it's still a vastly different game.

So yeah, I could see them move FE Warriors to fill a hole, but not XC2.  Now, they still have to do right by XC2.  I have said many times the franchise has far greater sales potential than has been exploited and I still think that holds true here but they've gotta market it.  With XCX they did a lot of build up and then fumbled at the 1 yard line, hopefully that doesn't happen again.

Most epic RPGs that sell gangbusters these days are Western though. JRPGs not called "Final Fantasy" don't tend to do so hot anymore, and outside of Nintendo enthusiasts, Xenoblade isn't a name with a lot of brand recognition.

I'm not saying it's a lost cause, just that it's not really a Christmas tentpole kind of game. For that you want a game that's going to sell 4+ million and make hordes of people run out to buy the system it's on. Odyssey is that kind of game, Xenoblade isn't.

I believe that is largely due to western RPGs being marketed worth a piss while most JRPGs get virtually no commercials.  if you just set aside the letters JRPG and step back and look at what the game is, I see no reason it can't be successful.  Nintendo just has to follow through with some actual marketing, not airing one commercial on 2 channels for like two weeks and calling it a day.  I mean, if Persona 5 can be a nice success, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a very good shot at being successful as well.

As for Christmas, I would not imagine it to stand alone.  I think they could make it work coupled with a bundle, be it Odyssey or Breath of the Wild.  My point was delaying XC2 and not Fire Emblem Warriors would seem very odd.  FE Warriors will get mulched in the holiday period.

The top selling game of 2016 was an RPG from Japan that outsold FF15 by more than three times.

"RPG" in the west has become more of a marketing term rather than a label for games in the RPG genre. Most of them are primarily action adventure games that utilize very little in the way of RPG mechanics.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Fire Emblem Warriors isn't a Christmas tentpole either so I wouldn't rule out a delay for it. On the other hand, another way to avoid it getting trampled would be to release it in the months before the holiday rush, like they did with Hyrule Warriors back in 2014.

Ultimately, Odyssey is their big holiday game, and in conjunction with already released heavy hitters like Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2 it can easily carry Switch's first Christmas. Much as I'd like to see XB2 released this year from a gamer's POV, I can see Nintendo viewing it as somewhat wasted amidst a packed 2017 lineup and bumped to next year to prevent a game drought in Jan-March.

As long as 2017 remains, until the last minute of the previous day release.

Some people are really confident here.

It's not that I'm confident it will be delayed, it's that I'm not confident that it won't be. Neither outcome would really surprise me at this point, it could go either way.
