I believe that is largely due to western RPGs being marketed worth a piss while most JRPGs get virtually no commercials. if you just set aside the letters JRPG and step back and look at what the game is, I see no reason it can't be successful. Nintendo just has to follow through with some actual marketing, not airing one commercial on 2 channels for like two weeks and calling it a day. I mean, if Persona 5 can be a nice success, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a very good shot at being successful as well. As for Christmas, I would not imagine it to stand alone. I think they could make it work coupled with a bundle, be it Odyssey or Breath of the Wild. My point was delaying XC2 and not Fire Emblem Warriors would seem very odd. FE Warriors will get mulched in the holiday period. |
Fire Emblem Warriors isn't a Christmas tentpole either so I wouldn't rule out a delay for it. On the other hand, another way to avoid it getting trampled would be to release it in the months before the holiday rush, like they did with Hyrule Warriors back in 2014.
Ultimately, Odyssey is their big holiday game, and in conjunction with already released heavy hitters like Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2 it can easily carry Switch's first Christmas. Much as I'd like to see XB2 released this year from a gamer's POV, I can see Nintendo viewing it as somewhat wasted amidst a packed 2017 lineup and bumped to next year to prevent a game drought in Jan-March.
