Forums - General Discussion - Business culture - Why do Americans go to meetings dressed in gym clothes?

I am not sure if this is just in some American cities, and not others (I can't believe that Los Angeles or New York would find this acceptable), but it seems to be very common. This is something I don't understand. Americans going to important business meetings dressed like they are about to go to the gym to exercise, even though they do not have any plans to exercise that day. This is somewhat true about American office culture too, they will go to the office dressed in gym clothes. Is this because there is some kind of culture among Americans where they always want to look like they are about ready to go and work out? This is also a fad that is catching on in some work places in England as well.

What is the reasoning for it? If anyone does this, I want to know why you choose those kinds of clothing instead of regular clothes?

In my experience this is not at all the norm. Maybe there's the occasional CEO or something that feels secure enough to dress casually, and if they're attempting to be public figures in some way they'll dress casually so as to promote a more approachable and down to earth image... Otherwise, while we're not quite as "suited" as we were 30 years ago or as the Japanese still currently are, from what I've seen most people dress "business"-like when doing anything work related.

The fact that it annoys you all the way in Germany is reason enough to do this imo.

Keep it up lads, why does this thread exist?

I am simply curious as to why this is done. Where did I say it annoys me? And why would that please you based on my nationality?

To convey disbelief that something is done would be a clear indiction that you feel it annoys you as you say in the OP "(I can't believe that Los Angeles or New York would find this acceptable),"

and it's funny based on your nationality as it would be if I was to make a thread on hear asking why Australians wipe their ass a certain way, the impact of the question and the answer makes to my life is nil as should be how someone goes to work casually dressed in US.

But yeah if you weren't annoyed by it and you think that feigning disbelief or shock about something like this is normal then power to ya, I'm out though this thread is a low point on VGchartz in all the time I've been here.

Because wearing a suit and tie doesn't make you smarter, despite what people dressing up for work like to tell themselves. Suiting up for work is really just an attempt to manipulate people into thinking they're smart or wealthy, albeit often a successful one.

Tech culture developed a strong anti-suit mentality. Look at Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg, etc. There's a saying, "never trust anyone wearing a tie", it originates from businessmen knowing essentially nothing but pretending they know more than everyone else because "selling", trickery, and manipulating people was how they earned a living. Their whole existence is to profit off the work or ignorance of others. Faking it until you make it may work on Wall Street or in Advertising but doesn't work when the product isn't just a personality, brand name, or snake oil but requires actual superior functionality/features. Wearing a suit doesn't increase your IQ.

Now that's what I call proper Jobs clothing.

Even now, he must be proud of me then. That's my daily outfit...

Thought gym clothes are formal wear of the slavs and russians.

Depends on the company. I have 2 jobs and they're both practically in the same industry. One requires me to wear a proper uniform and the other tells me to wear whatever the hell I want. So I typically go in skinny jeans, t-shirt, cardigan, and regular shoes. However I have coworkers who go more casual than me and go in practically their pajamas

At the place I worked, a data management company, it's business casual (AKA pretty much jeans and polos) but I've never seen anybody in gym clothes under any circumstances. Not sure where you got that impression from.
