I don't know... I don't make a distinction between DB and DBZ.

I read the manga before watching the anime. Which was filled with... fillers and stuff that weren't from Toriyama...

To me, it [the manga] felt like one cohesive narrative.

I make the distinction because it exists, even in the manga. The Saiyan arc is the first arc where many of these problems really start to crop up, especially the barren waste lands. Most of the issues start because the retconning of Goku's origin to be more like Superman, and the strive to make him special in turn.

Well, you've pretty much killed any mild curiosity I has for Super, haha.

As for DB and DBZ, sorry, but... I did kinda like DB for it's comical nature. It def was a fun watch, and I did watch a good amount of it. I just never finished it, and I'm not sure why. It was joyful to watch how Goku, Krillan and other characters developed into the people they became in DBZ. I still really enjoy DBZ probably because it was one of the 1st anime I saw and liked the story and characters in it. Granted I started from Raditz and I really came to like that part of DBZ. It was still in the early stages of the show, before power levels became a major focus, and the characters still lacked the incredible strength they eventually develop. I still think there is some good in DBZ, but it does start to muddy up in the Buu arc. It still upsets me how much they ruined Gohan...

Either way, I'd probably say I enjoy them both if given another chance to see both series.

Super is terrible. Pan being younger than at the end of DBZ is an issue.
Goten and Trunks not aging at all is another.

Having characters spend a year in the Hyperbolic time chamber just to reach a new Super Saiyan Level or characters like Vegeta almost busting a nut to get Super Saiyan in the first place... Whilst in Dragon Ball Super... Characters seem to be able to train for a day and match SSJ2/God etc' with relative ease.

Having Gohan not able to turn Super Saiyan 2, struggles with Super Saiyan 1 and imply he is stronger than Piccolo and that they should take "no chances" during the Return of Frieza Arc, undermines Piccolo's fusion with Kami and all the years of training after that... Just makes no sense. Then later Piccolo is keeping up with Mystic Gohan. Like seriously.

We cannot forget how terrible some of the animations are either.
And I feel like the epic scope, the epic threats, the epic over the top bad guys just aren't there in Super either.

With that. Beerus is awesome. He has made the entire show worth it for me.

Dragon Ball Z is still the gold standard for the franchise for me personally.

Beerus and a few others really help the show. Beerus is a villain who doesn't magically turn good, and never forgets who he is.

As many flaws as there are in Super, can't say I'm unsatisfied with the evil characters.

I would put DB & DBZ around the same level, one major difference though is that DB got better with each major arc while DBZ got worse with each.

DB
Pilaf/Tournament  <  Red Ribbon/Tien  <  Piccolo/Piccolo Jr.

DBZ
Sayain/Frieza > Trunks/Android/Cell > Buu

Overall
Sayain/Frieza > Piccolo > Android/Cell > Red Ribbon/Tien > Pilaf/Tournament > Buu

As for Super, it was cool for a bit but i have lost interest since it is essentially the Goku/Vegeta show and everybody else takes a backseat.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

the OG Dragonball cartoon is massively better than anything that came out after. It is charming and tells a much more grounded and building story around Goku growing up.

DBZ is just like a kid who loves action fights on steroids. The series at that point has good moments but half of the time its just people floating in the air telling endless monologues and going "ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH" and then a "next time on Dragonball Z!".

In Dragonball at least episodes flowed much more and continued forward. It was more varied with a focus on humor and side characters and random things. DBZ and anything beyond is just so flawed in obsession with the action. When what made Dragonball great was its charm and the fact that a lot of the action was more realistic in terms of Goku just seeming like a particularly strong kid in a lot of scenarios.

love the original series and agree with the OP

I don't believe you watched the latest episodes of Super, or you would know that nearly all of those abilities you listed were used recently, and that the Tournament of Power will involve a lot of strange techniques- not just power-ups.

I think the weakest point in DBZ was the Buu saga but to be honest its like watching the last season of Friends or something.

Its not as good as before but it still has epic moments such as:

Majin Vegeta vs Goku
Goku SSJ3
SSJ3 vs Kid Buu
Vegetas Sacrafice.

Those are some of the most epic moments from the show but do get coloured down due to the overlong arc.

I've only seen the movies back in the day and they were pretty good overall. But the Raditz / Vegeta and the Frieza sagas of DBZ are still the best overall IMHO.

BTW, anyone else think Akira Toriyama was heavily influenced by the DBZ Abridged videos on YouTube when he did Super? Half the time the dialogue in this series feels like it came from a rough draft by Team Four Star lol.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Anyone willing to take their nostalgia goggles off can see Dragon Ball is superior.

Dragon Ball Z was always the vastly better series.

There will always be that group though that prefers the under looked one. It's not even true just for this series. People seem to think they know more when they say the underrated one is actually better but it isnt.
