I read the manga before watching the anime. Which was filled with... fillers and stuff that weren't from Toriyama...

I make the distinction because it exists, even in the manga. The Saiyan arc is the first arc where many of these problems really start to crop up, especially the barren waste lands. Most of the issues start because the retconning of Goku's origin to be more like Superman, and the strive to make him special in turn.
