No, they're not. They're niche games, one of them being a remake of a PS2 game.

Remake of a PS2 game that sold over a million copies with undeniable quality and polish.

Would you not consider Xenoblade Chronicles on 3DS a AAA handheld game? I mean, I know it's a terrible port, but it's still an ambitious game.

Lol, how is Xenoblade an AAA franchise, let alone a downport of it? AAA franchises sell 5-10 million copies easily and they have the budget to match.

A game can be ambitious or good without it being an AAA game.

Times like this make me realize how handy it is to own/use a phone and a PC, for what they were designed and designated for.

You know, it makes sense that there will be increasing overlap though.

For instance, computers, monitors, game consoles, phones, typewriters, mail, calculators and so forth all used to be separate, expensive as heck pieces of tech in the early 1980's, but a little over a decade later they'd all been condensed into one or two devices, and now they all fit in your pocket.

It's not that ridiculous to believe that one day we'll all be buying one device as opposed to three.

No. But I have a Nexus6p and I don't do any of those things because I don't need/want to. So there's no real point to your post.

The Vita met his needs for years. Not everyone uses their phone for the exact same apps.

Exactly, and so there isnt much point to his or even your post either. Because the reality of the situation is that the Vita doesnt do A LOT of things that the majority of people need it to do to even remotely serve a fraction of the purpose that the OP gets from it.

No where does the OP or I suggest that the Vita met the needs of a lot of cellphone users. The thread was about the Vita losing a feature that enabled it to be an excellent cellphone for the OP.

And there will still be devices out there that can still one up the all in one product.

My og comment was more aimed at the idea of trying to dream let alone use the Vita as if it were some all in one device (which it isn't, not by it's design and main purpose anyway).

Sorry your taking the inevitable death of the Vita so hard. But just imagine this, a phablet sized Sony smart phone with removable Shock-Con controllers and a physical game card slot. More powerful than the Switch and much more capable for everyday use. It probably will happen sometime in the future.

I really hope that Sony eventually moves the Xperia brand over to a modified version of the PlayStation OS, and gives them full support for native playback of PlayStation titles. Ultimately, I would love to see Sony merge the SIE and SMC into one, and put all of their resources behind developing the hardware and OS. They have no future on Android, the sales have dropped every year for the last three years, and now they are selling less smartphones than PS4. They would be much better off selling Phones on their own OS to 10 million people a year, than continuing to build phones for a competitor, with no return on investment.

I've had a couple of emergency situations where I had to use my vita as a phone... welp. No reason to need the 3G version anymore.

Yeah, they finally made the 3G useless. Sad, that back in 2012 AT&T was boasting about how the Vita was going to change the market, and incredible things were lined up for the 4G model. Would have been great if Sony would have killed Xperia and kept with PS Vita. I really think the 5 Billion they have burned through in the last 5 years on Xperia could have been much better spent building up their own mobile ecosystem.

Well... It doesn't seem like nearly as big a deal to me as you're painting it to be, but I admire your passion lol

I imagine you can blame the Nokio N-Gage and Gizmondo for that permanent split... while it's unfair, there was definitely a bad taste left in the mouth of gamers when anyone tried to claim you could combine a dedicated gaming device with a phone, as the "Taco" and that Gizmondo/Swedish Mafia Toy become the source of endless jokes for quite a while there.

For the record, if Nintendo added a few features to the Switch I'd not be opposed to using it as a phone, just carrying around the tablet without the controllers. After playing "World of Goo" on it I have to say that I absolutely love the touchscreen, it's far better than previous Nintendo touch screens.

I'm curious though, how was the Vita battery life when functioning as a phone for you?

Early on I used to be able to keep Skype open, listen to Music Unlimited for the entire work day, with still being able to play a game at lunch or break, and check e-mail or the web from time to time. As the battery degaded, and the only way to stream music went from MU to TuneIn, it could only make it about 4 hours lately. I ended up docking it at work after Music Unlimited went away due to it always being dead by lunch.

This is a just a little back and forth thing Chazore and I have. He loves PC and Smartphone, and I love Consoles and Handhelds. He thinks I want PC and Smartphone dead (I do not), and that Consoles and Handhelds with more features will destory his hardware freedoms. I argue that Consoles and Handhelds being artificially limited is rediculous, and that it is crazy to actually want a device you buy, not be the best it can be. We go round, and round, and round. I respect his opinions, and I know mine are extream, but I still hope one day I can have just a PS Home Console and a PS Mobile Handheld, or as you are saying just one PlayStation that does everything.

The Vita met his needs for years. Not everyone uses their phone for the exact same apps.

To further his point, I still believe Whatsapp is the source of all evil...

A game can be ambitious or good without it being an AAA game.

AAA doesn't just have to equal sales. It usually refers to the quality and scale of the game. Very high quality, ambitious games are usually given AAA labels.

when my phone was dead, and needed to Skype, my Vita was there. Just saying.

At least I still got Crunchyroll, on beautiful oled screen.

Even though this doesn't effect me, it's bullshit. Everyone is taking shots at KBG29 but the real issue is removal of functionality. Just like the other OS feature in PS3. You shouldn't be able to strip out existing functionality like this. People make purchases based on what a product can do. I'm never a fan of this sort of action.
