Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why is Splatoon 2 still stuck at 720p? Why are most Switch games full HD?

I don't care much for Resolution but this is a question I'm really curious about.

Everything Splatoon 2 has shown us has been suprising me. New Zombie-like mode. Impoved graphics. New weapons. New Specials and ect. The one thing that stands out is the resolution. Trailer had 720p, Global testfire 720p and everything is 720p. There's been articles based on the resolution, youtube comments about gamers being dissapointed about the resolution. And also me. I'm curious. Why is Splatoon 2 720p?

Mario Kart 8 Switch Port is full HD, Fast racing RMX is full HD, Lego City undercover is full HD. But why not Splatoon 2?  Splatoon doesn't seem like a graphical demanding game at all. I'm pretty sure if a Mario Kart 8 port can make an full HD port, Splatoon 2 can reach full HD too. I know Splatoon 2 isn't a port but Mario Kart 8 literally PUSHED Wii U's hardware over the max PLUS adding more content.

This doesn't affect me much. But It's dissapointing. I have a 4K gaming monitor. So 1080p games upscale PERFECTLY on it. 720p games just makes it blurry for me. If I'm going to be playing a brand new Splatoon game for the next few years, I'd LOVE if it ran 1080p to take advantage of the 4K upscaling.

Idk honestly

Won't really bother me, as I will probably just lower my resolution to 1080p whenever I play it

I'd assume because they want to make sure that performance is high, as Splatoon 2 will really high to be so to be a success.

Hopefully the official release will make it 1080p, because splatoon 2 can def run 1080 on the Switch

But 720p also upscales perfectly to 4K. 1080p to 2160p means every pixel becomes a square of 2x2 pixels. 720p to 2160p means every pixel becomes a square of 3x3 pixels. Either way, it scales by an integer value, so it shouldn't be any more blurry.

Splatoon I think has more going on in multiplayer than those others games,8 on screen and very chaotic. Esp the ink physics probably. MK8DX prob dip to 720 in multiplayer esp 4 player. Also slightly more forgivable for FPS drops in a Mario Kart racer than Splatoon trying to be a competitive shooter.

Seems Nintendo's workflow focuses on upping the resolution last, so they may squeeze more out of it during the final optimization crunch. Either way, I'm not too worried. The game looks fantastic.

Splatoon is no way more demanding than other Nintendo games... ALSO MK8DX doesn't drop to 1080p in 4 players DF confirmed it.
Sure...
Sm4sh on wii u is 60fps/1080p with 8 players on the same console, splatoon is 1 player per console, with small maps and low res textures.

Maybe its the amount of cum ink that gets splattered on the screen?

Pocky Lover Boy!

My theory is:
They want to release the game as soon as posible in order to have something strong for the summer, so they have to rush the game a little bit, so in order to have a quality product rich in Content, they'll be sacrifying resolution.
