Forums - Gaming Discussion - The switch launch feels very quiet...

once pokemon for switch releases the masses will buy

hardcore fans will want Metroid or kid Icarus

I think if I never had the wii u then Zelda and Mario Kart for the Switch as early titles would be amazing and I can see the appeal a lot more. I'm not interested in the small indie games or the retro titles. I'm also not interested in weak versions of multi-format titles. I remember absolutely loving the following consoles when I purchased them (not necessarily at launch although some were) because they had great games (not necessarily exclusives); Super Nintendo, N64, Gamecube, original xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and Dreamcast. I was a bit disappointed in wii u and very disappointed in the early ps2 game choices and games I bought. I was also initially disappointed in PS1, Saturn and Megadrive. Surprisingly thinking about it I was actually very pleased with my 3DO purchase but I bought it late in its short life and many great games were available for very little money so I built up a great game collection including starfighter, street fighter, wing commander 3, wing commander, poed and quite a few others for very little money.

PS4 launch added together has around 2M units (a bit more), but it was staggered, Europe later than NA and Japan came many weeks later. So in one week Sony provided even less units than Nintendo (1 million for NA launch). Is Sony producing artificial scarcity? Or have all manufacturers probably problems to deliver on initial demand? It is clear, that after two-three months if the dust has settled the manufacturers have a much easier time to mathc the demand, but launch can for everyone somewhat tight. That's no specific Nintendo-phenomenon. Let's wait some weeks until the dust has settled, that says a lot more how the weekly and monthly sells go in the after-launch-time.

I just caught this message. but anyway... No, Sony has never been accused of artificial scarcity by anyone. Nintendo has been known since the Wii era of seeming like their product was overtly scarce to influence demand (regardless of whether it was true or not). They nintendo classic console is another issue in which theyve been accused of selling scarce amounts and giving gamers no hope of replenishing store shelves. It became evident to me that they only used the Nintendo classic (and $99 3ds) to supplement for  the dismal sales for the wii u had before the switch dropped.  Regardless of what I say about any platform, im not mentally beholden to any brand and I play all of them. Again, because of my lack of loyalty to any brand...you will see me call them out on many things that my bother dedicated fans, when in truth it might get people to think a little about these companies as businesses. I dont hate Nintendo, I just see what they are doing. The crazy part is I am noticing others talking about it as well. Regardless, I cant wait for Mario Kart.

Sorry, you seem not to have understand my point (I probably didn't mde it clear). What I said was, that Nintendo provided more Switch for launch than Sony did with PS4 launch. But it may feel different, as Sony covered one region after another while Nintendo did go for a worldwide launch. I didn't accuse Sony of artificial scarcity, I set the accusation about Nintendo into relation. This accusation is pointless. At launch crazy amounts of units are moved. Nobody really can provide enough. This all clears as the dust settles, but Nintendo isn't producing artificial scarcity, it is just difficult to provide enough units for a worldwide launch.

Gotta be honest, I get the impression that most of the people talking about some post-zelda Switch boredom usually strike me as people who don't actually own the Switch lol

Besides, the majority of early adopters are enthusiasts who know exactly what they're getting. Despite my initial skepticism (such as my regretful "Is this the weakest launch lineup ever?" thread haha) the Switch has easily been one of the most enjoyable early console experiences I've had. I also bought the PS4 at launch, for instance, and I seem to recall AC IV being just about the only game I played for nearly a year; the vast majority of consoles take quite a while to establish themselves and really justify their existence.

The Switch has done an excellent job in that so far.

Yeah, I played 160 hours on the Switch in just the first month, which is way better than any of the eighth-gen consoles I have.

I got a 3DS in December 2011, and I didn't reach 160 hours until 18 months later in June 2013 with Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

I got a Wii U in August 2013 for Pikmin 3, and it took 9 months until Mario Kart 8 to reach 160 hours for the Wii U.

I got a PS4 in December 2014, and I still don't have that much playtime on it, though Persona 5 might change that.

So, for me, no console has ever become "worth it" faster than the Switch.

So why did you even buy a PS4 in first place? Clearly the system isn't for you

PS4 has so many great titles that I don't even have time and money to play them all

I think Switch will hit a major slump as the initial hardcore fans are sold through. It's not hitting the mainstream mania of things like the Wii or PS2. I also don't believe that Kart, Mario, Splatoon, etc will do much. WiiU had all of that, and well, yeah .. no help.

Now Pokemon, that could really light things off in a big way, particularly if they can hit $199 before too much time passes. There's going to be a flood of major 3rd party monster IPs that will miss the Switch this coming holiday season, things like Destiny 2, RDR2, etc, and it will be difficult to sell a $300 switch to the mass market gamer crowd without something like Pokemon bringing them in.

I dont understand people like you.Mario games are gigantic and push sales(Wii, DS and 3DS as the earliest examples), Mario Kart games are gigantic and push sales(3DS as the earliest example), Splatoon is garnering pre orders in Japan like crazy, and Zelda is still selling extremely well even after 2 months of its release. Those kind of games didnt move the Wii U because the Wii U had myriad problems, and was simply not an atrractive enough for the general public, hardcore gamers included, and thats why it didnt move consoles.Pokemon is an important IP, but there are other IP that are as important as Pokemon, such as these I just mentioned. It really gets under my sking when people think that Nintendo consoles are only successful when they get a pokemon game on it.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I've said it many times, there are still people out there that don't know the Wii U existed or knows what it does compared to the Wii. With the Switch, there's a Super Bowl commercial, an appearance at the Jimmy Fallon show, and, recently, a Target promotion for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a huge Zelda ad in Brooklyn. Plus, owners of the Switcih can basically advertise the console out in the public, such as conventions and plane rides. There's no need to rely on word of mouth, alone. What better way to advertise than to show what it can do? It can play console games on the go or on the TV and with a controller that can be split in two for two player options. While it won't guarantee sales, it can potentially turn heads and build interest since there's nothing quite like it (unless you want to count the Vita that can play close to HD console-like games, but maybe not BoTW). And it's not like Nintendo's overall brand is all but gone. There's excitement when Mario was shown at the closing ceremonies of the Olympics at the hand-off and I'm sure fans (old and new) are more than excited for the upcoming theme parks. Plus I'm sure we haven't forgotten the phenomenon that was Pokemon Go.

There is a risk if you oversell the Switch like the wii that some consumers may think they are getting a mainstream console of reasonable power that will have support for most games when in fact its a low performance platform that will get limited support and not have access to cutting edge games. Games that push the ps4 and xbox one aren't going to be possible on Switch except in horrible cut down forms.
