Halo was originally an RTS, but Microsoft made the decision to change the game and make it an fps. It was also the first major fps online game on consoles and now a lot of great fps games became a thing on console because of MS. Sony has been horrible in terms of AAA first party titles. Horizon Zero dawn is their first big budget AAA title since Uncharted 4 (a year apart). Sony only looks good because of some of the niche japanese game support they get, but not many westerns care about for the most part. Microsoft will have crackdown 3, halo wars 2, forza 7, state of decay 2, sea of theives and probably more games to go with the scorpio in terms of AAA titles. While Sony big AAA games are gt sport (pales in comparison with forza 6 let alone forza 7) and horizon zero dawn (excited for this game) this year. Microsoft always focuses on the back half of the year because that is where most of the money is going to be made during the year.

Also, Microsoft helped with Gears of war which push the 3rd person shooter genre.

Really? Sony has horrible first party? LOL.....

No offense, but the reason why everyones asking Microsoft where the real games are is because there are no big new first party IP. The games you mentioned outside of Crackdown and state of decay are not highly andicipated, and none of them are really considered big games. Microsoft hasnt had a fresh new major AAA IP since Gears of War (2006) and the only reason I can count that as first party is because they purchased them. This means they havent had a major first party IP in eleven years. The last major AAA IP Microsoft made themselves was Forza and that was in 2005. Sony was willing to drop Nathan Drake in order to let Aloy take the helm for Sony. You conveniently forgot the last of us as well. This means Sony's last major new AAA IP to drop came last less than four years ago. There are plenty of first, second and third party exclusives that Sony has, which is why this month is essentially dominated by them no differnt than January.

If you didnt notice, theres a reason why Nintendo and Sony have been shying away from 4th quarter. Its not that they are scared of what Microsoft has to offer, but rather the market saturation that tends to occur because everyones gunning for the Christmas season. It was a mess and only one Sony exclusive was in it which was the Last Guardian.

LOL Microsoft helped epic with their month, no offense, but Microsoft couldnt come up with a new IP on par with Gears if they tried on their own. Even Phil spencer admitted that he tried to make games like Uncharted but failed to see it done. Thats why he paid to have tomb Raider as an exclusive to stay competitive with Sony. You can look it up. Microsoft knows Nintendo and Sony are more capable of pumping out high quality exclusives than they are. Thats why spencer will continue to congratulate them.

The real problem is Microsoft couldnt see the forest for the trees. Destiny would've been an exclusive for them had they allowed Bungie to grow into two teams. Destiny has been a pet project of bungie since before even Halo, I believe and that couldve been the major exclusive they needed. Regardless, its out now. They wanted to keep Bungie on Halo duty for many years to come and that doesnt always work with creative entities.

To be fair here STAGE, its all a matter a taste. My taste isnt in the Sony camp either and majority of there games are bland just like MS games. MS have been releasing new IP games all the time just like Sony. There probably over shadowed because of the popularity of the console itself.

Halo Wars 2 just came out with Sea of Thieves, Crack Down 3, State of Decay, Cup Head and more due this year. If there good is debatable. Are they Xbox games yes. They dont need a new name to it to be good.

I could argu that Sony lacks a major FPS franchise. As a FPS fan like myself i find that unattractive. No console is perfect. XB house the best FPS/Racing franchise out if the 3. Nintendo house the best Platformer and Sony house the best 3rd person shooter.

Its a matter a choice. MS release enough games as needed. Sony might release more however more doesn't always lead to better. Black Tiger is proof of that.

My taste is in both camps. Ive never not owned a Microsoft console. if anything is lacking its my Nintendo hardware. Its not about taste, but rather the fact that Microsoft does not develop on par with their competition. The best new IP they had this generation were both third party in Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall. Microsoft has paid to disguise their shortcomings. I'm cool with Halo and Gears as well, trust me. After last gen even the media started to notice Microsofts shortcomings as Sonys exclusives started to overwhelm them. They had more new IP's created than both Nintendo and Microsoft as gamestop posted in 2011. This is why this generation Phil Spencer said it is a big deal for them to focus on hot new IP's. If thats the case then the havent put one foot forward yet. Hopefully we are surprised at E3. I like almost all genres, so there is not really any console that I am not attracted to if the content is there.

At this point its beyond Sony to even focus on the FPS genre. It was a disservice to Sonys creative efforts to keep Killzone going. As good as the franchise was it was never great. No matter how great it was it was never top tier by even Sonys standards and thats why what Microsoft has to offer now isnt even considerable as a threat. State of decay is the only game I can consider since I hear about it so much, but yet so little from the mainstream and the same goes for Crackdown. Crackdown is no threat to anyone, including third party predecessors that paved the way for it. If Microsoft can give Crackdown the push it deserves, perhaps even I could be hyped about it and I love the open world sand box genre. When Crackdown dropped last gen no one spoke about it in a reverent fashion so lets hope theyve made an effort to make it relevant. Sonys top FPS team just created a genre defining game in a genre Sony has long since mastered and are now branching it out into open world RPG's. Most of Sony's gamers enjoy massive amounts of games from both the west and the east and thats what Sony does better than their competition. Where Nintendo and Microsoft both lack, sony has something to offer.

Sony and Nintendo were headed in that direction, no different than motion gaming and the switch but it could happen. Do you have any articles on this?

Upon further investigation, it looks like I was wrong. I saw that video of a midway employee showing of motion controls for the Drama and assumed Nintendo had bought the tech from him, but apparently there was a lawsuit over it, so...

Interesting. Yeah, the only one that we literally have info on buying tech from an almost finished project for direct competition was Natal. Im sure there are others, but theve evaded my sight. Its the electronics industry.  Sony's always pushing tech and formats and Nintendo is always partnering with a company to work on tech. At one point that was sony themselves.

On the contrary, it seems the game is still selling boatloads.

MS indeed shot themselves in the foot. They own a mega popular IP that sells great on every platform its on, even the side game sold well.

Given the fantastic sales since the IP was purchased and merch, MS may have already made the money back or getting there.

If they got a sequel to be produced, it could be a console seller.

i'm sorry but Ihave been waiting to see that amazing Sony creativity for almost 20 years... To me they have been as creative to the video game industry than fast foods have been to the restaurant industries... People tend to confuse quality over quantity.... To me their first party exclusive have been about as tasty than a double cheese.... It's just fast food junk for the masses... Hey but to each their own... After all a tone of people are just lovin' it... Padapa papa

Tell me...if Sony wasnt as creative to the gaming industry why do they have a title that they allowed to stay in development for almost a decade? Especially spawning as many IP's as they have? Gaming has become Sonys bread and butter no different than its always been for Nintendo. This is why you will never see the same attitude of patience in development like them or Nintendo. Sony nor nintendo can outspend Microsoft so the only way to beat them is to be more creative and cover their bases. Sony proved this by slaughtering the 360 with exclusives in the last three years of the gen. Eventually it became obvious when it became too dangerous for third parties to stay exclusive.

When MS bought Minecraft I was thinking what they were thinking, Minecraft was already past its prime, there was no way MS were going to get their money back. Almost anyone who had wanted had already bought and played it and youtubers and twitchers had already dropped it. But quick google search doesnt say anything about MS losses. It's like who cares, what is a few billion of dollars here or there for MS? And Minecraft is not the kind of game that you can make a sequel for, it would be like sequel to tetris, you can release it but it will be just another one of millions of versions of the original.

And that says anything about Minecraft sales? MS not making losses is more likely them being Microsoft or the US stock bubble.

To repeat once more, if MS invests in a high quality sequel for Minecraft it could give them the boost they need and the console sales they desire. Even moreso if they keep it exclusive, but I doubt it. MS is fashioning themselves to be more of a high profile multiplatform publisher than an exclusive developer/publisher. They want to be as accessible to people as windows is to the massive sea of audience they already have.
