Forums - Nintendo Discussion - This is what will make the Switch a hit, the JoyCon

The jiy cons are the new gimmick that drove up the price. Like the 3d of the 3ds, or the gamepas of the WiiU, it will be barely used and ultimately you ll think : "they should have released a more classic system to sell it much cheaper"

The joy cons are what willmake the switch fail

Wiimotes weren't cheap they were the most expensive controllers at the time as a Wiimote and nunchuck cost £45 -£50 here in UK compared to the £30 of other controllers and that's before we addin the factor of the WMP add on 2 years later which added another £15 to the price if you wanted to play certain games until they released the built in model. Joycons at least can function as two controllers per pair and don't look to require any future add ons for now.

They were cheap. At least they were competitve against other console makers. These are running for $80 for a set and that isn't cheap. Its the most expensive controller in the business outside of the Xbox One Elite controller.

They're weren't cheap at the time, 45 quid plus 15 is also 60 quid which with inflation is higher than a joycon right now and the former also required batteries. A joycon set is two controllers essentially with all the required features out the box.

I don't think it will make it a hit. but for me it's the only positive think about the switch, switch is that what wiiu should have been in the first place. nintendo introduced the wii and than (almost) ditched everything it made great for massive useless touchpad. I loved the wiimote, I loved sitting with my arms spread and easy point on the display. I loved playing metroid / pikmin with that. and then they ditch it again for a more classic control option and made games like starfox out of it. the problem with the wiimote was, it had not enough buttons and was forced on every possible game, even if it is totally useless like in dkcr. now the joycon have the same button layout like a classic controller (buttons + analog stick, trigger) and still everything good about the wiimote and it's optional. games like dkcr can be played with spread arms and classic controls, while in metroid you can enhance your aim with motions controls.

I'm not going to be manipulated into calling controllers "joy cons". They're Switch controllers. Having said that, if the Switch does take off, I doubt it will be because of those. It'll be because it's a hybrid. That's the selling point.

To be honest the only really new thing the Joycons are doing is the HD Rumble ... which is neat ... but it's just a rumble technology. It's not going to dramatically alter game play.

Every system has some kind of motion control technology, it's old and standard technology these days.

If 1, 2 Switch sells millions and millions of copies like Wii Sports and Wii Fit did, I'll admit I was wrong, but I don't see it happening.

To be honest, they should really demonstrated the HD Rumble feature better. It can do some crazy stuff.

If you want a classic system, buy a classic system. This is not a classic system and that's good.

It may be a more advanced version of the Wii-mote (and a less confortable one by the looks of things), but people just don't care about that stuff anymore. The Wii-mote was something new, Joy-Cons don't really do anything that's really new. They are going to be a non-factor either way, not going to be taken advantage of or a major selling point, and turn out to be a waste of R&D.

Yeah the JoyCon's looked cool. This is one thing where I can agree that Nintendo did a good job with Switch.

But there`s an important point you just mentioned. Price. You may think it`s expensive, but, consumer wise, the price itself doesn`t matter. If the person seems value to it, they are going to pay for it, unless they just can`t pay it in anyway.

Sometimes trying to go cheap could have hurted more than helped.

Definitely, just that it's competing with the PS4 and Xbox and pricing it within the same price ranges will definitely affect sales

Is it competing though? Switch offers a whole slew off differant play styles to PS4 and X1 and really in terms off Traditional console PS is king. Nintendo would commit suicide by going against Sony in a arms race.
