Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Kart 8 hits 8 million

It sold an additional 300k between July and December, depending on how successful the holidays are for them, software sales wise, it could come very close to tying, tying, or maybe even passing Super Mario Kart by the end of the year!

Which is pretty crazy when you consider that Wii U has about a quarter the install base of the SNES.

Hell, now that I think of it, this means Mario Kart 8 has outsold more than any Gamecube game, despite working with half the install base.

Well deserved. MK8 and FH3 are the best racing games iv ever played. MK8 totally deserves its sales. I can only imagine if it was sold on a console with a much bigger User base.

I agree. MK8 is an amazingly good game.  It is far and away the best game on the Wii U, and in the conversation for best game of the current generation, IMO.

It's the game that finally convinced me to buy a Wii U (at launch of the game).  I've since played a bunch of good games on the system.  But, even if Mario Kart 8 was the only game available, it would have made the Wii U a worthwhile purchase.

I'd like to see Nintendo blow out Wii Us this holiday, maybe packaged with Kart and one of the Mario Bros games for $250 or so.

I doubt they'll do it, as they'd figure it would cannibalize Switch sales. But, I think it could be good a good way to get lapsed Nintendo fans back, and bring some new fans into the fold.

They're not going to move consoles to Wii U owners very well if they just port existing games over. Wii U owners are definitely the most loyal Nintendo customers, so they certainly want to get those sales.

They aren't simple ports though. Depending on the extent of the enhancements and pricing I could easily see them bringing people over when coupled with plenty of new experiences of course.

Nintendo loves to port old stuff to new systems.  So, I'm sure they'll do a bunch of it.  Also, considering the poor sales of Wii U, there will likely be many Switch owners that didn't play the original versions.  That's not going to make the 15MM Wii U owners rush out to buy the Switch though, and Nintendo needs every early system sale they can get.  If this thing doesn't do well in the first 12-18 months, its all over for Nintendo in the hardware business.

Yeah, I hope for Nintendo's sake that they don't lean too heavily on Wii U ports. Old games aren't going to sell the Switch.

MicroSony wishes they could get these kind of attach rates. Sure, it's inflated by being on a Nintendo console, but who cares. It's a fantastic game.

I think they plan to sprinkle them around as supplemental things.  Too many new games too close together saturates things too much so I think they'll have the ports in slots where it would be too soon for a new game but still a kind of droubt.  Or they could make them just a one time collection of supplememts to the launch lineup.

Releasing them as filler in between new releases would be fine, I just hope they don't think that old content is a substitute for actual new games. If people didn't buy a Wii U for MK8/Splatoon, they're not gonna buy a Switch for one. The system will need new killer apps of its own.
