Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why do we insist that NX has to be another PS or XB, or else it'll fail?

Does NX need to be on par with PS4 and XBone to succeed?

Yes 96 30.77%

No 118 37.82%

Yes, but... 33 10.58%

No, but... 65 20.83%

Total:312

The NX at the very least has to be capable of playing the same types of 3rd party games that the PS4/X1/PC platforms regularly get without any major compromises. The majority of core gamers out there aren't going to accept yet another under-powered console that has a gimmick as its selling point (motion controls, 2nd touch screen etc) for three straight generations now.

The "casual" audience that Nintendo was able to capture with the Wii has moved on to tablets and smartphones... the only way Nintendo is going to reach this audience is with more apps like Pokemon Go and Super Mario Run. If Nintendo can't compete with M$ and Sony on the home console front in terms of hardware, media features and 3rd party support, the NX will probably be doomed from the start again.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Because the better looking versions were on PS4/XB1, and the online for Wii U is kind of a joke.

Honestly, I think if Nintendo dropped the kid gloves and gave people a real party/chat system, it might solve a lot of problems. Nintendo has failed for 2 generations to get online right. Culture's mass embracing of online could partially explain the Wii's dip in popularity near the end of its life, and could also partially explain the Wii U's failure.

The thing is, though, it doesn't need to be as strong as PS4Pro or XB1Scorpio. Just close to the base models' power. Enough that developers can say "Okay, we'll develop for this, then port up." Combine that with a real online service, and Nintendo could finally compete on PS4 and XB1's level... Except they'd have Mario and Pokemon, which would give them a massive advantage.

I dont think Black Ops 2 were released on the PS4/XB1. The WiiU version had voice chat and the online was free.

I think the image they have been given as "being for kids" is the thing that hurts them the most. Nintendo makes games for everyone and that will never change. I dont think COD, AC, BF, GTA etc will ever be the reason for people to get a Nintendo console.

1. Online for Nintendo is still a joke.

2. It needs to at least be in line with PS4slim and XB1S in power.

Who is "we"? I for one don't.

I insist though that the NX has to be another Nintendo system with new (and old) Nintendo games, and I'm pretty confident that it won't fail in that regard.

Take a look at the polls, they're dead even. I don't feel this way either but watching all the videos and talking with students an uni has me wondering why people feel this way.

Not going to happen, so we can count that one out.

To put it bluntly people have tunnel vision when it comes to trying to be successful, the only way in their mind to be successful is to copy what's already a success. This is a common problem in many industries right across the board as well, the problem is this most of the time never leads to a success as you'll never dethrone the market leader by copying them. The pattern of success often involves putting your own spin on things and that's how Nintendo have always operated and always should operate tbh.

I'd also rather NX was something unique than a me 2 type of console tbh.

Then goodbye Nintendo. I look forward to their third party titles on PlayStation, because this will be the nail in the coffin.

Well as long as they dont go mobile or PC only, Im fine with it.

I don't think Nintendo is necessarily going after the console gamer crowd. I think they're more interested in mobile gamers, who have moved over to tablets and smartphones. That's where kids are learning to play their first games these days (sadly). That's where the casual market is. And that's where they can realistically innovate and draw attention.

I think the NX is more likely to be a device that blurs the lines between the tablet market and consoles. Something mobile gamers can pick up and play their games on, but also have access to quality AAA games. In that sense, the NX doesn't need to beat out the PS4 or Xbox One; it just needs to be clearly a better entertainment tablet than others on the market.

And I think that will be easy for Nintendo to do. Easier than releasing a console to compete with Sony and Microsoft anyways. For one, Nintendo's handhelds have historically sold better them their consoles by a wide margin (we're on VGChartz, look it up). There's clearly a lot of people who will purchase a portable Nintendo device right away. Second, the tablet market is stagnating. No one's doing anything interesting or new. It's just slightly better versions of the same stuff that came out last year. Nintendo swooping in offering a tablet that can do the same stuff but also play high quality Nintendo games will be an easy sell for any families buying a family tablet (which is a big market). If it can play console quality games like Breath of the Wild, too, that will be an easy win for a lot of core gamers and definitely Nintendo fans. And if it can run a video signal to your TV and let you hook up more controllers for multi-player, all the better.

If these suspicions are correct, Nintendo should be worrying more about creating a competent tablet than dealing with Sony or Microsoft. But there's a lot of pieces to this puzzle still missing, so we'll see whenever the thing is revealed...

Simple and same issue as Wii U: 3rd parties won't port many games to NX, and whatever they do will be regarded as inferior. It doesn't sound competitive for a home console.

Sure it doesn't have to be powerul for core Nintendo fans, but Wii U's sales tell the limit of that.  To sell more than Wii U it needs to go well beyond appealing to the core fans.  To have Wii like appeal it would need another catch.

As a handheld the device doesn't have to be powerful, and has potential to sell well like Nintendo handhelds before it... except the design if accurate shows a 6" screen which isn't handheld size... it's Wii U GamePad size.

It's always doooooom for Nintendo.  Half of their share price came from their new mobile phone games... so if Nintendo listen to their shareholders it will become more and more a mobile game company.

My 8th gen collection

I think there aren't that many pros in making a PS4-XBone console. Nintendo won't really use that much that power, and the few 3rd parties that could port heavy things might not compensate for not having a cheaper console.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
