40+ regardless if it's a handheld, home console or both. Nintendo can't really just turn a profit on it. People in general need to perceive it as a success. Is Nintendo still relevant as a video game console maker to gamers or is just a shadow of it's former self just trying to turn a profit? Is it able to replicate that wii's level of success or was that a fluke?

If it doesn't sell more than 40 million, Nintendo can't profit on it?

WTF are you talking about? Both the GC, the N64 and even the Wii U (yes, the Wii U) were profitable with sales lower than 40 million.

Also, Nintendo's money comes from game sales... And, well, look at the Wii U... 13 million units, but Nintendo games can still sell over 2 million quite easily.

Ot shouldnt be by number of HW sold its a factor amoung a whole bunch of variables.

Reread it, genius.

Around 10 mill first year.. And +50 mill lifetime.. would be a big succes..

Success for Nintendo is based on profit. As long as it makes them a very good profit, it will be a success. # of consoles isn't really a factor though I suppose it will be in the 20-30m range

How many NX Nintendo threads need be made for it to be considered a success?

Answer: 10 million. Based on last count, we need about 100 more.

Seriously though, if it can sell more than 25 million (which would beat GameCube sales), I think that would be a marginal success. 40 million would be a success, and a notable competitor to the PS4 / XBOne. 60 million would be a huge success for Nintendo.

The question is irrelevant. Nintendo made it so that the question doesn't matter. They patented that add on power box that will pretty much keep NX around for the next 10 years without issue. This means that the number of consoles isn't as big of a factor since it will be riding through up to 3 generations without issue. All told I wouldn't be shocked that by the time its over, there will be over 150 million NX handhelds and consoles sold over the next 10 years. Once Nintendo establishes NX as a forever console, people will be unafraid to invest in Nintendo.

Agreed that there are several other variables involved.  It was just easier to get an overall guage by units sold.

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

My original number of 35-40 million is based on it strictly being a home console.  60-80 million for the hybrid sounds about right as well.

Im sure the Wii U has turned in some sort of profit at this point, but Nintendo still considers the console a failure. Success is not alway synonymous with units sold but its a pretty fair indicator.
