Forums - General Discussion - Panama leaks - shit about to hit the fan?!

Thank goodness I'm only slightly rich, why I even had to pick up a part time job. Well, I didn't have to, more of a shits and giggles sort of thing, that and take your daughter to work day is coming up and I thought it'd be good to have somewhere they can actually see me work this year so they have an idea what the real world is like.

So it's a tax evasion thing? Well in that case these people are heroes in my book! Fucking corrupt governments steal way too much money anyway.

Sigh... Yeah because all of those "heroes" would be just as wealthy without the government.

In Denmark we pay up to 60% of our income in taxes but that is a major part of why Denmark is ranked 1st in Europe and 4th in the world on the Global Entrepreneurship Index 2016.

"Fuck the corrupt and thievish government for helping me start up my company! I'm not going to give anything back to society! I can handle myself now so I'm outtie!"

Additionally, Denmark is ranked 1st in the world regarding happiness. Thanks to the strong (and expensive) social security system that we support through our taxes.

It provides free universal health care (covers everything), free education (we're being paid $800 a month to study), support for retirement (17% of our lifelong income), unemployment (up to 90% of income is covered for 2 years), prescripted medicine (free for all under 18, support when over), dental care (free for all under 18, support when over), child care (at least 3/4 is covered by the state), maternity leave (20 weeks of paid leave, 32 more weeks of leave for both parents during the child's first 9 years), vacation (5 weeks of paid vacation + 11 paid holidays), elderly care (support for home services as well as nursery homes), etc. In other words "extraordinary security and opportunity" for the Danes as Bernie Sanders said.

"Fuck that! The capitalist system in the world is perfect! It's more important that Bob is able to afford his 34th supercar than Eric is able to afford paying for food and shelter!"

Too many big corporations get away with tax evasion.
Thats a bigger issue, than just the avg joe rich person.

Still I think they should be made to pay the tax's they dodged by shady means, if they are caught in it.

Like here in denmark its common for big american companies like mcdonalds, pizzahut, coca cola, to all run at basically no profits because they ship that overseas to america and then pay nothing in tax here.

That issue is alot bigger than rich single persons, avoiding tax.

I agree. The only problem is that it's perfectly legal when corporations do it, despite the fact that tax evasion by big corporations is a much bigger problem.

So instead of fighting the major problem, tax evasion by faceless corporations, we'll now be pointing fingers at a few selected VIPs.

And it really seems like western media are already trying to use this for propaganda reasons:

For example, many media articles discussing the Panama leaks are now mentioning Putin - but apparently his name is not even on the lists, just someone Putin knows.

On the other hand, Ukraine's Poroshenko apparently really IS on the lists himself - but most media articles over here don't even mention his name.

I agree somewhat. It's when they start using that tax money for things that aren't necessary for society however that it gets annoying.

For starters I know local councils have a habit of wasting tax money on ugly ass statues that nobody wanted. And then wasting more money cleaning/repairing those statues when they are vandalised for being so ugly...

Then there's all the millions/billions that governments just give away to other countries. Yeah I get this is usually in the case of disasters (natural or otherwise) or whatever but I still think people should be able to choose whether they want to donate their money to that cause rather than having the government deciding for them.

Plus here in the UK you there's TV tax too. Now that's just a joke. Having to pay tax to the BBC just to watch TV. Doesn't matter if you don't watch the BBC, doesn't matter if you think the vast majority of their content is complete crap, you still have to pay for it? Nah, that's just wrong. I'm just glad that Netflix/Amazon don't count for it so I can avoid paying it. Wish I could watch live sport without having to not only pay for that but also pay the BBC for doing fuck all, but I can't because of stupid governments and their pathetic unjustifiable taxes.

Oh and then there's inheritance tax too. Pay tax on everything you earn and everything you own already, but if you want to pass it on to others after you die you have to pay tax on it again? Because the first tax wasn't enough or something? Then they die and it's taxed a third time? And so on and so on...

You can blame the government or you can blame the populace or electorate.  In the US for example federal income tax from 1950 to 1990 fell dramatically because the people elected people such as Raegan overwhelmingly in part to do so.  Now, plenty of arguments to be made both ways and how it affected the national debt, but every decision we make has consequences.

If people feel strongly enough one way things do change, why we no longer have monarchs with actual power in vast majority of the world.

Shits been hitting the fan since the turn of the century. I see no reason to slow down now
*starts playing highway to hell*

But seriously humanity is pushing itself toward grave peril. We aren't walking, we're running and I'm not surprised in the least by this leak, nor will I be surprised when it's swept under the rug within two weeks so that we can focus on important subjects such as the breed of dog the kardashians just picked up.

I can hardly pity you for that. Over here in Germany we have the same thing, called "Rundfunkgebühren" - but I think it's much more expensive over here (17,50 Euros per month, no matter how rich or poor you are) while at the same time the quality is much worse than what the BBC produces.

Just today the first german was sent to prison for being unwilling to pay for it.

I actually consider high inheritance taxes to be a good thing. It's usually the rich who usually try to convince the public that inheritance tax is bad - because it's obviously them who suffer from high inheritance taxes, while the poor would actually profit from it.

Inheritance is one of the major reasons why the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor, the whole concept is socially unjust.

Might I respectfully suggest changing the thread title to something that reflects the actual news? It's currently so vague as to mean nothing, and I was about to post a thread on this same topic since I didn't see any thread titles about the leaks.

Leaving aside how that means the rest of us have to pay for the roads, schools, and other services instead, a lot of the folks in this leak are the very same people running and/or related to the people running said corrupt governments.

Is the thread title better now? :p

Yup, can't wait to see Camerons PR machine and how they try to spin this.
