Forums - General Discussion - I'm Moving to America :-)

It's a shame that a lot of the old guard have left, back in the day it was quite well-known that it was my dream/goal to move to the US.

It's taken me a long time and many attempts, and I finally decided to take the Masters route. My girlfriend lives in NYC (well, technically, NJ), so I applied to a handful of schools in the area. I received my first accept a couple hours ago, it was for one of my safer schools. There are a few results I haven't heard back from yet, which I am nervous about. At the end of the day, though, I finally get a real shot at living in the US.

It's a shame I have to take this route, though. I'm exceptionally talented at what I do. However, due to America's broken immigration system, no employer would look at me until I had several more years experience under my belt. The structure almost forces young talented people through the University system.

One of the reasons why your tuition fees are so high is because you're being outbid by the Chinese and Indian 1% who just want a shot at living in a far better country, and they're willing to work hard and go through hell for it.

(I'm not Chinese or Indian, my gf is Chinese though).

When you arrive, make sure they give you your free gun and mustache. The last few people forgot to ask and it took them months to get their complimentary stuff. The mustache is optional but go ahead and take it, anyway. If you don't like it, you can always shave it off.

Glad to have you!

You know us Canadian's would've been more welcoming. Toronto is close enough to New York's "hip" life.

I'm kidding. Enjoy yourself, I wish to go to NYC someday as well.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

The US is pretty nice. Not nearly as bad as the internet may have you believe. Its not too unlike the UK (where you are seemingly from) but naturally it has its fair share of differences. The east coast is more like the UK in terms of culture than the west coast (where I'm at). Personally I prefer the more laid back nature of the west than the more business minded east. But I'm sure you'll like it! But you're in the NY/NJ area, so watch out for bad drivers

Glad to hear you finally found a way. Congratulations and good luck!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I said I'm moving to NYC. I don't think the free gun rule applies there They have a stall outside the airport, anybody who approaches gets immediately handed over to ICE. No sanctuary for them.

Congrats m8. Good to see your dreams come true

Who knows what the future holds. If Brexit happens, and Boris gets his proposed Britain-Canada-Australia-New Zealand free movement of people plan through, I could very well end up working in Canada at some point. Especially with my girlriend being Chinese, your Government is super friendly to their wallets.

Just wait, wait until the 2016 presidential election. A lot can change in America over this election. If Trump wins, go back and enjoy your life. I'll be moving too if he wins.

I've spent too many hours (days? weeks?) of my life defending the US on the Internet. It's been a dream of mine since I first landed in Florida 9 years ago. I've spent quite a lot of time in NYC and Florida since (typically about a month per year), so I know quite a bit about what's going on.

Certainly much more than what I knew about Hong Kong before moving here, only research I had done was watching the Rush Hour movies.

I actually find NYC to be very laid back, I find it relaxing to visit :P But then I've been living in the constant-heart-attack of HK.
