Speaking with IGN in an interview for next week's episode ofPodcast Unlocked, Xbox head Phil Spencer spoke about the recent price cut on the PlayStation 4 in Japan, expressing his confidence in the likelihood of it soon happening in the west.

"I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price. When I think about the playbook they've used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we'll see a price drop from them coming."

Spencer also mentioned Sony's presence at Paris Games Week, suggesting perhaps an announcement could be made at that time. But, he doesn't necessarily feel threatened by the possibility and even suggests it would be a good thing.

"It's great for gamers when price competition happens. We saw that last holiday, and we saw crazy sales numbers on all of the consoles," he said.

He's certainly right about price competition being good for gamers. So many crazy bundles and deals last holiday season, this one will probably be even better.

A western pricecut is a given at this point.

There was no price competition last holiday, Xbox One was basically being given away in the US xD

But it'd be weird if they didn't have a price cut this holiday, not because they need to but because going more than 24 months without a pricecut in unreal.

This is good PR. Now if Sony doesn't drop the price they seem stingy.

It seems that way. The Xbox One gets outsold even when it's at a lower price, so it would be dead in the water at the same price as PS4. They definitely need to keep that price advantage to keep moving units.
