Forums - Sony Discussion - "Naughty Dog's greed is out of control"

So I saw this topic on Gaf this morning and thought it was one worth bringing over here for discussion, for the OP I'll lazily copy the OP from the Gaf thread, I'll add my thoughts in the second post.:

As anyone who plays the multiplayer on Naughty Dog games knows, Naughty Dog loves to siphon money from players through microtransactions. The microtransactions would be fine if they were included in the season pass but most of them are not. Purchasers of the season pass are expected to cough up even more money if they want this content.

Uncharted 3 has an insane amount of microtransactions so I will just post one image from the store.

There are 13 pages and 390 results. As you can see, this includes the actual game, the season pass, Little Big Planet DLC and some free themes (since I can't find a way to search DLC only) but that only makes up around 10-20 out of 390. The rest are devil wings and alien masks. This F2P trash has ruined the game's theme with silly things like horse masks and bird nest hats but it's all cosmetic so I could live with it, even though this garbage has no place in a full priced retail title.

Give them an inch and they take a mile. Let's look at The Last of Us.

The greed was taken to a new level - the pay to win level. Naughty Dog began to sell weapons and perks outside of the season pass in a full priced retail title. Some may argue that the paid weapons aren't any stronger than the free ones but that isn't the point. Naughty Dog crossed a line that should not be crossed. This is actually worse than many F2P games because there are typically in-game (sometimes grindy) methods of attaining paid content in them. Not in Naughty Dog games.

That's not all with The Last of Us. After The Last of Us Remastered released last year, those slime balls over at Naughty Dog tried to release paid DLC maps (outside of the season pass, of course) to make an extra quick buck off of new players but backtracked after some backlash (no one wants to buy DLC for what is supposed to be a complete edition). They did release more paid guns, unfortunately.

Here is a nice article from Destructoid, going into more detail.

I'm not about to pony up for any of it, but it doesn't affect me that some people are willing to.

No, the more serious infraction here is in breaking one of the tenets of competitive multiplayer. Those who pay more should never have an advantage over those who don't. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the tactical weapons and survival skills bundles provide. Though it isn't utterly imbalanced with the premium content in play, the new guns and perks are often better than the base game counterparts. Not only that, but the loading screens are littered with advertisements, outlining just how great the new weapons and skills are.

Naughty Dog Points

In shameless Naughty Dog fashion, we can see that there are even more microtransactions headed our way. Heist Drake was my favourite skin in Uncharted 2 so it sucks that is behind a paywall but what is truly concerning are these "Naughty Dog points". If this were EA, I wouldn't be worried but we're talking about Naughty Dog here and they only get worse.

Speaking of EA, they have a way better DLC model with Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare and Battlefield 4. In Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, everything is attainable through normal gameplay. In Battlefield 4, if I buy premium, I get everything (and much better support than Naughty Dog provides). You thought EA was greedy? Naughty Dog is worse (when it comes to multiplayer, single player has remained untainted so far unlike Dead Space 3).

TL;DR: Just because they release incredible single player games doesn't mean they can behave this way in multiplayer. Releasing paid DLC outside of a season pass is disgusting and pay2win weapons/F2P trappings in a full retail title are even worse. It's pathetic and undignified, and we need to stop giving them a free pass.

Disclaimer: I blame Naughty Dog and not Sony because they are Sony's only first party studio that does this. In 2011, Sony released Killzone 3, Socom 4, Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 and only Uncharted 3 contained microtransactions like this. And Naughty Dog has displayed some degree of autonomy so unless I learn otherwise, I'm blaming Naughty Dog because this is a Naughty Dog problem.

I know but there games are so good I forgive them and luckily they don't lock vital content mostly skin so no pay to win, but pay for e-penis, besides who bus Uncharted for the MP anyway

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

woah, that amount of microtransactions

Not a big deal. Uncharted games are already complete without dlc. This is for those that want more.

Nothing wrong in microtransactions as long as they translate their profit in more awesome games.

Offers just follows up on demand. They wouldn't sell it if people didn't buy it.

Skins, hats, whatever, I don't give a fig about those.  They can sell those for $10 a piece, for all I care, and more power to the rich kids who can afford them.

However, if there are skills, weapons, or perks for sale that can only be attained with an extra purchase, and those items are irrefutably superior to anything available in the base game, then I will not be playing your multi-player.

Don't care at all, i only play the solo ^^

They are multiplayer related, so it doesn't affect the single player campaign at any level. It's good to have these options to buy and knowing you aren't forced to get them to keep playing unlike some other MPs that you almost feel forced to buy new things or you'll get outbalanced easily.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

I only play single player, so my concern is if sort of stuff becomes part of that.
