Ice Cream at takes some skill to make.  You have to source good flavors (or sell it cheap to people that don't care), make sure you incorporate just the right amount of air.  Get your crystal size just right, etc.  It's a crafted food. .

Hearthstone seems to have it's flair in the cards and transitions.  Gameplay?  Just like so many other things.

Would people really play it if it didn't build off Warcraft?

K. Thanks for the invaluable input about ice cream.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

I've never played Hearthstone or WoW. I'm downnloading Hearthstone now out of my game designer's curiosity. Can anyone tell me any games with similar or better gameplay that I can get for free on PC or iPhone?

It wouldnt have the same pull.

Warcraft is still a pretty big deal. When you add in a whole bunch of things that Millions of people can relate to and enjoy almost instantly, to a game that is quick and easy to play on a variety of platforms, you will have great success.

Hearthstone hits all the right notes. Popular lore to feed off, simple and fast gameplay, can be played at home or on the go. Also, good for social stuff considering it uses Battle.net

Edit - Makes me wonder what they will do for eventual Starcraft and/or Diablo things added to the game.

Magic Duels just came out which is the new digital platform for Magic the Gathering which is like the slower, more complex big brother of Hearthstone, but unfortunately Hearthstone beats it in every way when it comes to the digital version. Magic Duels has a wonky and confusing UI and it really takes a lot of getting used to, and the cards they included in the game don't really have enough diversity to make what I would consider to be a great deck. Maybe I just need to unlock more cards, but even just getting packs (if you are going F2P) takes a lot longer, because the packs cost more in game currency than in HS and require more games to be played and with longer games, that really adds up.

I love MTG, but the digital version just doesn't stack up to Hearthstone. Try it out if you are curious what obviously inspired Hearthstone, but if you aren't going to be playing with physical cards then it really isn't worth it.

Thanks, that's is kind of what I thought.

Not knocking the game, just surprised at it's massive following.

I wonder how many people have played Warcraft now?  Not just one sitting, but really played a while so they know the world, some lore, etc.

It's like years ago they, I think when Halo: Reach was coming out that as many people have played a Halo game as had seen a Star Wars movies - or some kind of comparison.

Warcraft is over 20 Years old now. Each RTS sold stupidly high numbers, and the MOBA genre came from a Warcraft 3 mod.

World of Warcraft peaked at 12 Million subscribers, IIRC. Not 12 Million total sales, but subs at a certain point. The Warcraft TCG was running for 6/7 Years, and was replaced by Hearthstone which has taken the TCG world by storm in popularity with over 30 Million registered accounts. Add on to that several best selling novels by accomplished writers, the lore has expanded to literally Millions of people worldwide.

The Warcraft film thats being made right now has a budget north of $100 Million. You can bet it wont be just Warcraft enthusiasts who go and see it.

Warcraft as a franchise, right now, is one of the biggest on the market.

Right, that was 12 million people all playing and paying at the same time - how many played total?  If we look at just World of Warcraft the game - it says 10 million in sales.  And I know you needed the base game for Lych King, Burning Crusade, etc.  So I think our numbers have to be off - or people bought digital and we can't see them.   Plus Warcraft I, II, III, but some of them (like me) overlaped with the 'World' too.

Oh, yea, the Movie.  Hopefully it will be really good.  The still I have seen look good.  I think much will depend if they make it too 'for the kids' or they make it more of a raw less friendly story.

So it's looking like more peole are playing hearthstone than played the other Warcraft games.  So perhapse it attracked a good number of new consumers?
