And yet it's those "tough" American men that helped to make a short, portly middle aged plumber in overalls and an elf-like boy in tights two of the most popular videogame characters of all time.

Link and Mario weren't made popular by 16-35 year old US males. They were made popular by 5-12 year old US males. Gaming back then (and I can attest being that I was 6 when the NES came out) was mostly a children's thing. It wasn't something that alot of grown men started doing until the PS1 came out which, coincidentally enough, got popular based on "M" rated, more mature games like MGS and Resident Evil.

There is little to no difference between the Tales character design you linked and the 3 "good" examples you have.

Comparing Atelier is completely disingenious and an all around bad comparison. Find some bishoujo SNES or PS1 games and make the comparison.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I like the last one the most. The first one looks like it came from Dragon Ball anime lol. Which isn't bad, just weird for a jrpg.

The series that pretty much gave birth to the JRPG genre and is to this day one of the biggest JRPG series in existence is based on character designs from the Dragon Ball maker...

So you're finally  giving credit to Monolith Soft.

I know what Chrono Trigger is. But I don't memorize every single person who may or may not have worked on the game. That red haired character looks like he comes straight from Dragon Ball Z lol. The blond chick looks like the girl from Dragon Ball who switched hair color and personality when she sneezed.

And no, Chrono is not one of the biggest JRPG series to this day. And no, it did not give birth to the JRPG genre.

He was referring to Dragon Quest.

All JRPG literally means is that it's a japanese role playing game. Those are JRPGs but they just don't fit neatly into the JRPG stereotype. Japanese devs are starting to play around with different kinds of RPG's than what they typically do. I don't know how many gems we missed because they were never localized.

I disagree, i understand that the industry uses the term J-RPG not to games made in japan, but to those that follow a japanese school of design/narrative.

That's why we can find "western J-RPG" references for example. We can make a pool about that later to see how VGC gamers see this.

I do agree the name was a mistake from the industry. We should be calling them "narrative RPG" (where we have a story to listen, like final fantasy) and "expression RPG" (where the focus on story will be smaller to allow you to do (and be) whatever you want, like Skyrim).

It's an abbreviation for Japanese Role Playing Game. It only needs to be a rpg and made in japan to fit that. It does not pertain to a certain design or narrative. There's many sources I can find that agrees completely with what I said.

It is no different than how WRPG is used and the meaning only differs on western/japanese. If a WRPG is not open world and has fixed narrative without being able to customize the charater's looks, does that mean it's a JRPG? No, it does not.

If you can find quotes from japanese devs who say that games like demon's souls or dragon's dogma are not JRPGs, I'll believe you.

That's just crap. Can you name any genre of video games, books or movies that is defined by its region of production?

JRPGs and WRPGs are genre definitions for different design philosphies.

Western developed jRPGs:

Eastern developed wRPGs include the likes of Demon's Souls and Bloodbourne.

Well, that explains why I had to think of Dragon Ball Z when I was watching some footage of Dragon Quest VIII. That one guy looks so much like Mr. Satan lol.

I'm a fan of both genres but I find myself spending less and less time playing jRPGs now than wRPGs. From RPGs in general, I look for immersion and story. WRPGs generally worked better on the immersion front due to more open worlds, customisation and variety in gameplay mechanics. JRPGs always told a deep story with well-thought out side stories about different characters that really added to the world. In the SNES and PS1 days, if you wanted to play through a good storyline, you played a jRPG. They practically had a monopoly on story heavy games.

I think the problem with jRPGs today is that other genres (not just wRPGs, and not just Western developed games for that matter) have either caught up or surpassed jRPGs in terms of ability to tell a story. A jRPG story in this day and age needs to have an exceptional story or really excel in other areas to stand out. Even your average FPS campaign is capable of telling a story with cliché characters and basic tropes (and sometimes, they're even good!). If I want a good storyline in a video game, I don't really have to play a jRPG anymore.

DBZ design is the main reason why DQ feels too weird for me, but it guess it's also one of the main reason why it was so popular.

Now i'm too old for DBZ, i watched this anime at least 200 times and i cant bare it anymore
