It was on sale for $10 at the e-shop, so I finally picked it up, as it was one of the reasons I got a 3DS back in 2013, but held off on getting it as it was delayed in Europe by a over year with no physical release, and I had other games to play.

Anyway, I've played it for about 15 hours so far and I'm liking it. For the most part.

The one thing I don't like is how you easily get a Game Over if you don't strike the enemy first before entering battle.
The reward for getting a premptive strike is reducing the enemies health by 5% or so, and the punishment can often result in your entire party being wiped out before you even get a chance to act.
I don't feel that the mechanic of striking enemies first outside of combat is interesting enough to warrant this. It's not challenging or fun, it's just annoying.

For that reason I'm considering lowering the difficulty if this persists, but lowering difficulty in videogames is not something I've done in a very very long time, as I generally don't like to play below Normal.

If you die a few times in this game, you unlock the ability to lower the difficulty or change it back again at any given time. So I died a few times at the beginning on purpose to unlock it, just in case it would come in handy at some point.

For those of you who played the game, what did you do when it came to the difficulty, and the insta game over from failing to strike enemies first?

What I did was lower the difficulty. Why? Because honestly the game is pretty difficult, even on easy mode. It also allows for less stress in the game and allows you to want to keep playing it. Because personally, when I am having a hard time in a game, I never want to play it.

Either way, I would highly suggest lowering it especially since it is your first game in the series. (assuming it is)

You'll love the game when you finish it. It's phenominal.

From what I understand the first couple of hours in the game are the most difficult.

It was my first game in the series. I finished it yesterday after like 70 hours.

The normal encounters can get tedious, but the boss ones are quitte challenging. At least to me.

The demon leveling was very fun to me. It was like breeding monsters :).

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

I haven't played Shin Megami Tensei IV yet, but if a game proves too hard, I'll just lower the difficulty or check a guide online. There's absolutely no shame in doing that. Who the Hell am I trying to prove completing a game in a harder difficulty?

I'd rather just have an enjoyable experience than a frustrating one (note: I get people have a kick off a challenge, personally I just don't).

I don't think I ever really had any issue with that mechanic, although, the game does have a weird difficulty curve. The beginning is super tough because of how easily you die but it levels off from there (you should be past the beginning at 15hrs though)

I'm actually stuck in the game right now idk what to do XD

I manned up and dealt with it because it becomes second nature very quickly, and the game isn't THAT hard.

agree. i die more than 5 times in the early game. after leveling up abit and understanding how the game works, i am much better now (still suck anyway)

sry for my bad english - it is not my 1st language

Currently loving it. Clocked like 52 hours so far. Around 1300 saves so far.

Spoilers:

I have got the new mission of going to Midtown and see the true evil Yuriko mentioned to Walter. Currently at level 50 with Genma (50) Undead Alice (50) and Hel Reaper (49).

I suck pretty badly at this game, even on the Easy mode. When I last played it, I was about 10 hours in and stopped for awhile. After a month, I'm ready to get back to it. I would just knock down the difficulty to easy and press forward. It doesn't change the flow or fun of the game, I would think.

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P
