Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the XBO version of FFXV a mistake?

I'm kinda wondering whether SE thinks the Xbox One version was a mistake. The DF analysis of the Episode Duscae demo is out and the XBO version falls very short of the PS4 version technically.

"However, Xbox One turns in a more concerning level of performance. This version already operates at a lower resolution as it is but despite that, the frame-rate falls pretty far below the PS4 version. On average we're looking at a 5fps deficit in comparison, with precious few scenes ever reaching 30fps. The game immediately feels slower and less refined on Microsoft's platform leaving some of the scenarios feeling downright unplayable. Add in minor screen-tearing that rears its head across the top of the screen and you're looking at a rather poor experience. As it stands, this particular demo produces perhaps the lowest level of performance we've seen in an Xbox One game to date"

"The real question is whether or not the development team will be able to get a handle on the game's performance problems by release. With so much time until then we're certainly hopeful that they can reach the 1080p30 target, but based on this showing in this demo, we still have concerns. On PlayStation 4 it certainly seems achievable, but the Xbox One version runs at a low enough resolution and frame-rate that the optimisation effort is frankly immense. We have no doubt that the final game will look and run better on both platforms, but can they really ramp it up to a full 1080p 30fps when the current level of performance is so lacklustre?"

To bring it to the standard they're aiming for will require a lot more work on XBO version. If the Amazon charts are to be believed, that version will not sell well, it's apparent an overwhelming majority will play this game on PS4. The PS4 version of Type0 has been the nr4 top seller for many days, while the XBO version never breached top 100 afaik and has fallen to nr 193 already. The disparity with a multiplat was never as big as with this game.

So I'm wondering whether the costs of porting it over and putting in more polishing work to a game that is not gonna sell well is really worth it.

What do you guys think, what's the sales potential of the XBO version?

Yeah a huge mistake...

... For Sony fans.

It's a mistake for Microsoft, who probably had to pay a lot of money to that game on their platform.

I think it can pass 1m sales on X1 which is more than worth the port.  The game appeals to FF fans and is reaching a new fanbase.  Almost every youtube video about this game I see some comments saying they've never played  FF game before but with the new direction they will now.

There's definitely an audience, but it's a much much smaller audience. I think it'll be obvious that the game will be prioritized for PS4 over the X1 version. If you're a hardcore FF fan you probably own a PS4 anyway so its a non-issue. But for first time players that get it on X1 they may have a more watered down experience which is a shame.

Came here to say this. Guess I'm not needed here

I see the PS4 version selling much much more, probably triple the amount of the X1 version. But might still see decently on X1 to make a nice profit.

Not much else to say, really.

I imagine that FFXIII still stings to this day (although that one sucked).

FFXV will be the best-selling JRPG on the XBone (mostly due to the lack of comptition on the system from other JRPGs). But that will be it. It would have been more succesfull porting the game to the Vita or the WiiU, even if downgraded.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Its obvious that Microsoft paid Square Enix to break contract so I am sure SE is just fine with it. It will most likely be sold anywhere but Japan. The name change is most likely the result of a break in the exclusivity contract to so Microsoft could get the game as well. Microsoft knew they couldn't lose this game.

It's just common sense. Sony should've paid SE to keep it exclusive and you know how Sony is about moneyhatting most Japanese games, they just wont do it. Microsoft is willing to pay for the good ones so they broke it.

That relationship probably made it pretty easy for MS to moneyhat SE again with Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Fanboyism can lead to a lack of reasoning. This will only allow the game to sell more and what Square wants is more money for their efforts. Just be happy you're playing it on your console choice.
