Profits > Bigger Installbase

Companies have to prepare tomorrow's profits too. Nintendo's is losing clients at astonishing speed, what are today's profits good for if you have no revenues tomorrow?

Because you can live to fight another day?

What's the point of having a large install base, if you are bleeding to the point of death and likely not be around for much longer?

They´re trying to please Japanese investitors. They´re going for profits this year rather than building a huge userbase with losses (what Microsoft probably is doing with the XboxOne)

Expect price drops next year.

The UK retail has adopted Black Friday quite heavily this year (Black Friday has never been a thing over here).  Right now can find Xbox One and PS4 bundles for super cheap, like PS4+Driveclub for £280, GTAV and TLOU for £300, Xbone+CoD:AW for £270, Xbone+4 games for £300.  Plus lots more.

Meanwhile Nintendo bundles are sitting at the prices they were 6 months ago, or last year.  Many have no discount at all.  Wii U+SSB+MK+CPP =£300.  Thats right, costs more than the PS4/Xbone bundles.

Why has Nintendo not done deals with retailers for Black Friday deals?  Have they given up?  Do they think they don't have enough games to make back the discount loss in future software sales?

The Wii U situation in the UK is pretty sad atm.

It's not that Nintendo is not trying get sales, it's just that retailers are just not stocking Wii Us anymore, my local ASDA doesn't even have a Wii U section like it did last year and during last summer they were offering the base Wii U model for as cheap as £150 (when I got mine btw), the situation is pretty much the same in Toys R' US and many other retailers (like HMV, Tesco, to a certain extent Argos, etc...). Gaming focused retailers like GAME do have Wii Us but the market penetration is very dry if you don't have your product every where like the PS4 and X1 currently do.

I think Nintendo is trying to make profits instead of trying to increase the user base and although those bundles don't seem that bad (if you weren't comparing them to those PS4/X1 bundles, but that's the main point of your post which I can't disagree with) I think it's safe to assume Nintendo is playing very safe in one of its weakest markets.

It's bizarre because this time last year I got a Wii U with Nintendo Land and Wind Waker HD on a Black Friday deal for £180. Though that was on the Saturday of Black Friday week on Amazon UK. I haven't seen a first party bundle through-out this week, though, not even any Nintendo published titles reduced. Maybe Nintendo UK decided not to play? Or they're going to do their own sale before Christmas? Not a clue.

The UK population has made it patently clear this generation that they cannot be reasoned with. If such discounts are what they need to make a Nintendo purchase while Apple products and the likes apparently have acceptable price tags, I can honestly say that they don't deserve it.

Because they don't want to buy a console with an unwanted expensive accessory pushing the price up?

Yup. Thank you.

As for the OP, deals or not. Too late to change the perception of the product.

Fuck that's pretty good

There is enough deals on the net if You are looking around. I must admit, while I am all for spending less money, I dont think dumping and discounting adds value People who want a Wii U want it for the games, thats why one can not blankly state the U has to be cheaper because its weaker hardware. The PS4 stull doesnt give me Kart or Smash or Zelda, and I had my 2 hours fun with destiny demo and that told me it isnt for me. People must eventually understand that software sells hardware and no one buys a console because its a pretty device. A deal like above is VERY reasonable for the tons of fun it provides for You and Your couch mate, and if that was a 99 pound deal up there, it would be rather awkward.
