Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pachter: Xbox ONE should have the advantage over the long term.

If they can make 1 billion in a few weeks I dunno why they bother with gaming, It's such a hard business to make good money out of. Seems like they're better off sticking with what they know.

MS has spent a lot of money on devices that was "sure" to go nowhere: Zune, Windows Phone, Surface etc! Why not throw some money on something that can succed? If they want to win this they have to sell with a loss.
Give away the hardware and profit on the software, subscriptions and advertisment.

i think the surface doesnt do that badly tbh, generating more that 500million in revenue each quarter, meaning like 5-6million sold a year.

EDIT: I havent seen much of patcher so i dont know, but is he like the equivalent of what toastboy is to these forums?  (no hate)

If that's not proof enough that "analyst" is not a real profession, I can't help you.

"Analyst"(s), in al fairness is a real profession. When they are actually doing what they are supposed to be doing. Which is analysing data. The problem is that every single analyst so far seems to have no clue how the gaming industry works, or better yet how the game consumer thinks. And this use some very very very very very strange completely stupid things to explain why they think the numbers will move in one direction as opposed to the other. they are just not in tune with the consumers. Here are some notable examples. All said by "analyst" as to why XBO will beat PS4 before both were released.

  • XBO has skype, being able to make calls from your Tv is something that will gamers will be really interested in
  • Kinect is a killer app, it will completely revelutionize how gamers interact with their console. Being ablet to turn your console on with your voice will be a game changer.
  • Looking from sales of the original kinect, MS can gaurantee sales of at least 10M from kinect fans alone. That wil give them an edge over sony since sony chose not to bundle a camera with the system.
  • XBO has an edge over the PS4 because it has a better online service than sony (obviously these guys don't know anything about PS+)

Interesting, thanks for the info.

Wait are we agreeing with Pachter or disagreeing with him this time. I get confused.
OT: These writers seem to think the console they are arguing for exist in a vacuum. To close any gap, you require consistent outselling. This "price drop" is not a long term solution. Bloomberg needs to stop citing IGN.

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

The stupid thing is that Xbox could have been highly profitable as a software delivery system and third party a LA steam + console dev overlord.

As for pachter, ign, etc.

They are media/business suit type stodgy derps that don't understand gaming and never will. If there's one thing they can't grasp it's a paradigm shift. They got used to us Xbox dominance in gen7, and can't comprehend why gen8 isn't identical. ZERO insight or true examination of the facts and feelings that affect the market. Without the ability to see reality they just make whatever bs predictions and statements that have no bearing on the real world.

If those types were more than useless bags of bullcrap we'd see xb1 heavily outselling the ps4 in the us, and even competitive globally. Shows what absolute imbeciles most of them are.

Maybe but people just end up buying the same console as what their friends get and people right now are getting the ps4.

Also you shouldn't cover up one division's losses with profits from the other divisions. The Xbox division still lost them money.

That's what I got too. Thread backfire.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Yep. And judging from software sales, last gen console user base is MUCH smaller than what these idiots think. A lot of people forget that xx million consoles doesn't mean xx million people are actively supporting that console. Millions upon millions are broken, trashed, forgotten, moved to streaming duties, garaged, traded in and sitting in a GameStop warehouse, etc.

If the 360 was still really active (and ps3), last gen sales wouldn't be so vastly low for cross gen big games.

Microsoft is not a longer term style console. They will have to spend the whole gen throwing away cash for games to random companies. They cannot keep up with Sony's development and ten year profitability cycle. This was completely proven by the PS3.

That billion every week is overall revenue. Not just profit.

And to answer your question on why bother with the gaming industry? how does $76B industry sound to you. That is how much the gaming industry made in 2013 alone. And its expected to go up to $86B by 2016. As it stands, the gaming indistry is the largest entertainment industry (only behind television) in the world. Its actually bigger than the movie industry. So yeah, lots of money in the game industry.

For a litle more perspective.....

highest grossing film ever is Avatar. $2.8B. Highest grossing single game so far.... GTA $1.8B and counting. If you were to put it in the highest grossing movie top 10 list, it would be in 3rd place. Why do you think warner bros. is investing more in games?

Somehow I think people will take this Pachter nonsense a little less seriously than they took the "MS to lose a billion!!1" nonsense from that other thread.

Its already happened lol
