Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Post NPD fallout: The central question imo is if a X1 that was cheaper than PS4 would outsell PS4

Wasn't the X1 cheaper in US than the PS4 this month? If you take into account the free game it was. And look at the giant push it got from that.

Exactly !  What I said. They just had a temporary boost, then down again to their standard.  It's the VALUE of the console what really matters.  PS4 is just considered a bigger value, because it is.

Even if it was (and I don't think it was) it doesn't matter. It's the entry price that counts.

Its the value a consumer perceives that counts.

Even at 350 fo a X1, the PS4 is a more attractive buy.

Don't think so. At this stage the entry price counts more than the value. You can put how much you want in a bundle, if a person earns that much there is only so much he or she can spend on videogames. $500 is way too high now. People will start considering more the value when we enter the 199-300 price range.

Thus the value becomes even more important, if you can only get one you will do the research and choose the best bang for your $  And that is the PS4.  The more stingy people are with the $ the better a buy PS4 looks.

Your 50 $ price advantage at 350 dissapears if the person wants MS offical battery pack and headset adapter.  then there is 60 for Gold yet all it does is unlock online play, Sony gives you free games with Plus and it has a bunch of FTP games on PS4 that are not on X1

It's basically what I said from the beginning. Price isn't the X1s biggest problem. It might not even be the second biggest problem. So a price cut alone won't do shit. See WiiU for reference.

Losing Kinect would be a bad move. It would push the value even lower than it is now. People who buy the X1 for its exclusives will buy it at any price. People who don't care about the exclusives will buy the better system. There's really not much reason to choose a kinectless X1 for 350 over a PS4 if you don't already care about Xbox games.

They are very similar, they play mostly the same games, PS4 hasn't that much more value from my point of view. But it has a lower entry price. If X1 was cheaper MS would easily dominate those regions where the xbox brand is already strong. And you can see that the brand is strong from X360 sales. It's a situation very similar to the early PS3 days. The PS3 back then had more value than the 360. You could use it as BD player (and they were expensive). It just costed too much. The X1 is actually doing much better than the PS3 of those times.

It's difficult because last gen MS were able to always stay 1 step ahead of Sony in terms of price, and Sony couldn't just cut the price. This lost them a lot of sales, but made MS lots of money from gold.

I was thinking that either would be slow to reduce price, but you know what, longer term I think they both now want this PS+/Gold user, it makes them lots of money, and the problem for MS is that a lot of 360 users are moving over to Sony and paying for PS+, which in the long run is going to damage the profit of the console. So in term trying to shift consoles cheaper even at a loss might still be the best route for them.

The problem for MS is by dropping Kinect, they have lost one of their key features that they made a big fuss about. They drop it, not sure it will help that much.

One other thing to consider they are panicking right now because they had a 20m+ difference to Sony in the USA, that will make a massive difference to their bottom line if they lose that advantage this time.

Mainland Europe is always Playstation no matter what. Not sure why but it seems like Sony can do whatever they want there and still have large majority of marketshare.

An even lower price for X1 would boost sales in US & UK, if MS did it early enough and to the extent you suggested I think they would win those territories this gen. But worldwide no. I think for MS to win WW this gen would be the biggest achievement a console has ever produced

No it wouldnt domminate anything unless it has considerable price advantage, 299 vs 399 might not even be enough if its kinetic less sku.

Similar while PS4 being superior.  More powerfull hardware +Plus a better deal 3rd party games run better on PS4 and the promise of excluives is greater on PS4.  50 price difference does not magically dissaapear all thsoe disadvantages X1 has.

Weakness for X1 is its home marlet is also least brand loyal.  Europe has proven its sony loalty last gen and 5-1 sales in certain places now between Ps4 and X1 drive that home.  Current Ps4 and X1 sales prove NA lacks console brand loyalty.

A $349 SKU will easily outsell PS4 in US and UK and with a good margin. They are already head to head now. That is enough for them I think. And let's be real. The wiiU path is very different, X1 sales were never bad in absolute terms like the wiiU one have been for a long time. They are going to surpass the wiiU later this year despite releasing later.

Yeah, I didn't mean to directly compare it to WiiU. I guess the comparison is that I dont think Nintendo could do anything to save Wii U. They're truly helpess. Even if Wii U was 199, people wouldn't buy it. Even if it was $99! People might snatch it up at $99 (which of course is impossible anyway) but it would still be outsold by PS4 imo over the long haul.

MS better hope X1 isn't doomed to that position. I'm not saying it is. I probably lean that it isn't.

Interesting question.  But if the Xbox was sold at $349.99 with or without a Kinect then Sony would drop the price of the PS4 by $50 making it $349.99.  But PS4 would still be more powerful than the Xbox One.

Sony wouldnt drop price, they dont need to.  X1 with TF and massive marketing still got beat.

All PS4 needs is some games and X1 wont even get near it.  I hope Sony is ruthless and drops UC4 this holiday, other then Halo5 MS has no counter.  This holiday could seal this gen for good.  Id love to see a holiday war between PS4 and X1 with Halo5 on one side and Uncharted4 on the other.
