Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is 2D Platformers still worth $60?

Definitely depends on the game. There are some 2D platformers that I would definitely pay 50/60 dollars for, but I am highly selective about which ones.

I started making videos for youtube; check them out.

Contra (No Deaths): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_OdnbGgupM

Super C (No Deaths): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHoJrHWATgU

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (Mike Tyson TKO): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4L7oDV79aw

Systems owned: Atari 2600, NES(3), Top loader NES, Yobo NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega Gamegear, Sega Nomad, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Playstation 2, Wii, PS3 (slim 120 GB), Wii U

You should congratulate me. I destroyed the vile red falcon and saved the universe. I consider myself a hero.

Indie games are generally inferior to proper games, and putting them up against the best in the industry is like putting a mouse in a cage with a lion.

This is just wrong on so many levels. Indie development is getting better and better as days go by. From Minecraft to Papers, Please. From Don't Starve to Hotline Miami. From The Stanley Parable to Outlast. So many brilliant, unique experiences that not only sell as well as the $60 retail games, but continue to grow with dedicated fanbases.

To call them inferior to "proper" games is extremely shallow.

Minecraft is garbage, like 99% of Indie games.

In their quest to stand out from the crowd, they become overreliant on gimmicky gameplay and graphics, cloying pretentiousness, and amateurish game design.

Indie games that would be laughed out of the house if they came from a major dev get a free pass because just cos they're "indie", and steadily they're lowering the standard of video games.

To me? No.

I have a hard time completing 2D platforms that are over a few hours.

Hahaha

Minecraft has fantastic word of mouth. Its genre defining. Its easily accessible to anyone. Its a brilliant videogame and thats why it continues to sell so well on every platform its released on. For anyone to think Minecraft is garbage, they would have to lack any kind of creativity. 42 Million and counting baby, haters gonna hate.

In the quest to stand out from the crowd, theyre succeeding. Thats what matters. People like these games. Theyre not being hyped up beyond all measure by throwing money at the likes of IGN or multi-Million Dollar advertising campaigns... Theyre selling on word of mouth. The gimmicky gameplay is part of whats selling them because theyre different from everything else on the market. Theyre different from the Yearly Mario, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed.

Theyre fresh. Theyre worth the asking price, unlike a ton of $60 games. They offer unique new experiences... And most important of all - The consumer loves them.

Depends on how long the game is and how good the levels are.

Consumers love Twilight and Justin Beiber too, doesn't mean they're not insipid trash.

I never liked the idea of 60$ games in the first place, so I'm inclined to say no. It's not just for platformers, though. The majority of these 5-7 hour long games aren't worth 60$ to be perfectly honest. Games are just over priced in general these days.

But do you think that twice the people would buy a game if it was 30$ instead of 60$? Just so that the developers/publishers get their money back?

That's a question I think a lot about. 20 years ago games costed even more than now, not including inflation and so on. At that time they got away with it though, since there were no 1 dollar mobile phone games.

No, I don't. Just look at how games sell after the price has been cut. I think the core fans are going to buy their games regardless of the price. I don't think launching games at half the price would double sales. In fact, I think developers would end up worse off with that strategy.

It doesnt matter what you or I think.

If the consumer likes it, its doing a good job. Its good for the target audience. Its a success. Its good for the industry.

If it doesn't matter what we think, why are you defending them?
